please Help! Don’t know how Invoices Work. Am i stuck with a venue?

Briana, on May 23, 2024 at 2:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 4
Yesterday I called a venue and was happy with it then asked how much the deposit would be and how that would be paid because I was happy with the pricing. The venue owner sent an invoice and a contract today that I have not signed. I have also not paid the deposit. However, there is a more convenient and nicer venue I saw yesterday that I am more interested in with more flexible dates and more decorations. If I didn’t pay a deposit for the first venue and did not sign the contract, can I still back out? Or because I received the invoice in an email, am I stuck with that first venue?

If you did not sign the contract, you and the venue have not contractual agreement and you can absolutely back out of it. You can always just reach out to them and let them know that you found something that works better for your event after they sent those to you.

Thankfully this happened before you signed or paid anything as most venue payments are non-refundable. I would also recommend wedding insurance if you haven't been told about that yet. I had no idea it existed and our sweet representative was giving us tips she learned while getting married months before.
Thats very exciting that you found another place that works out better for you.

Since you have not signed a contract, you are not locked in to the venue at this time. You can absolutely back out if you choose. Once you sign a contract, then you are locked in to the terms of the contract. You could still change your mind after signing a contract, but you'd likely lose your deposit (and may possibly still owe the full amount, depending on the contract you sign). If you'd like to switch to a different venue, then do not sign the contract the original venue sent.
