Playing breakup songs at a wedding?

Gen, on July 16, 2018 at 6:21 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
We’re trying to make a playlist for our reception and it just occurred to us that so many songs that we like are actually about people breaking up... is it weird to play these at a wedding??? Or is it weird to deliberately cut out songs that are about breakups? I honestly haven’t been to a wedding since I was like 9 years old and I have no idea what is the normal thing to do about this 😂

I’d say if they really are like billboard hits for you and they are upbeat songs by all means feel free to include at least your favorites. You don’t have to play every break up song you guys picked.

Eh i don’t listen to the words or connect those things together- however if I knew it was about a break up I would cut those songs out- there’s tons of fun songs you can play tthat are about other things so it’s up to you! Good luck!

I'm pretty sure the last wedding I attended played "I Will Survive" and that is most definitely a break up song lol I think a few are okay as long as they are upbeat and something people enjoy. I guess I never thought about that Smiley xd

I don’t see how it would be a problem, as long as it’s not super sad and slow. Like half the songs on the Billboard top 100 are breakup songs anyways lol

I’m way into lyrics and FH is not so he keeps putting break up songs on our list and it makes me crazy but he’s just into the way they sound not the meaning. So if y’all just like the way they sound then go for it. If you’re like me and you really listen to the words then maybe cross those off the list

I am one of those people that notice those things and at the last wedding I attended I noticed quite a few songs that didn't seem wedding appropriate to me. I think most people don't think that much into things but there will always be a handful that do!

I Will Always Love you by Dolly Pardon or Whitney Houston is definitely a break up song and I can’t remember a wedding where it wasn’t played.

Lol see but I am also one of the people who thinks way too much into those things! I mean, it wouldn't "bother" me but I mostly just don't want it to give a weird vibe hahaha

If it's a popular and upbeat song, I say go for it. If it's slow and blatantly about a breakup without even having to focus on the lyrics, I would skip.

Share the songs with us please. I think it’s a case by case thing. Like someone previously mentioned, “I will survive” is a fun breakup song I wouldn’t mind during a wedding. But “New Rules” by Dua Lipa is an upbeat and popular song that would still make me cringe a bit if I heard at a wedding. Still I wouldn’t obsess about it as a guest. I’d be having fun.

Well, our first dance song is about an affair (I've Been Loving You Too Long by Otis Redding), so I'm in the camp of play what you want. I don't think anybody will read anything into it. And if they do, oh well. Do what makes you happy! : )

My parents who have been married 30 years this year, first dance was "Hold Me, Thrill Me Kiss Me". It's most definitely a crazy break up song but my mom LOVES it.
