Plates... Paper or plastic?

Kendra, on January 20, 2016 at 6:36 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

My FH and I decided that since we love to be in the mountains so much we wanted to have our guests be apart of our passion. This led us to booking our venue in a beautiful group campground close to the city. It is in the mountains and is absolutely what we wanted we are going to do burlap and blue lace runners down our tables with wild flowers in mason jars. hanging lights ect.. My parents are paying for catering and they offer nice heavy paper plates. I am excited about this however I really want pretty silver trimmed heavy plastic plates. I am the only one who wants these but no one else thinks they are necessary. I feel like paper plates with catered BBQ food is really back woods country. Not quite the theme I am going for. My family and my FH think i'm ridiculous. Can I get some other brides opinions on the plate debate? Please and thank you ladies!

Well, my personal opinion is that I hate (with a passion) disposable eating elements. Especially at a wedding. I'm a bit of a "tree hugger" and don't use paper plates, ever. A roll of paper towels will last me six months.

A wedding should be a classy event and paper plates does not convey that IMO.

Unfortunately since they are paying they get an opinion. I would just tell your parents your gong to pay the cost difference. I think when your wedding day rolls around you will be amazed at how little that small detail matters to you.

There are compostable paper plates. I think it's inconsistent to be in a beautiful natural setting and then use plastic, which isn't biodegradable, all for the look. They will be covered with food and no one else will care about the plates.

If it's that important to you then do it; are you willing to pay the difference? Honestly not a fan of plastic/paper picnic ware for a wedding but it sounds like your best option with your location.

I think the plastic plates sound like a great idea. They sound like the prettier alternative, and if you want them, you should go for them.

We're having our reception in an outdoor garden in our hometown, and we are opting for pretty and heavier clear plastic plates. I think they look nice.

We've been to a campground wedding before in which the couple had bamboo plates and utensils. They got them here and the site also carries biodegradable plates made from sugercane. They looked fine and were heavier than a normal paper plate.

I used the silver lined plastic plates that you are talking about. Though we did a seafood boil and bbq, it kind of stepped up the tables a notch. We got them at Costco for relatively cheap. I did not want paper plates, but didn't want to rent china since my family would have had to clean it up.

If you want the plates, buy them yourself, then they can't say anything!

I would go with the nicer ones. I generally am against plastic implements at weddings, however, plastic or paper makes complete sense for your venue choice. Certainly would be weird to have fine china out in the woods at a campground. I think your idea sounds neat!

I've had paper plates leak through if the food is too saucey! Are the ones they provide thick enough so that won't happen? Plastic or bamboo seem safer.

@MaryEllen our rental company is actually providing them for us! They're taking care of our tent, tables, chairs, etc. and are providing plastic plates and cocktail napkins.

I think that the silver plates like VM had would make your tables look a bit classier than the heavy paper plates. I say get the nicer looking plastic ones.

Thank you Ladies! I am thinking plastic it is just like the ones VMDIZZLE posted. It is definitely not china but it fits the location. I really appreciate all your input!
