Plates at places for buffet reception?

Amy, on September 19, 2017 at 6:15 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

Is it unsanitary to put everyone's plates at their place at the reception for a buffet dinner? My thought was that they would just carry them up with them when it's time to go, but please tell me if it's considered unsanitary like taking up the same plate to a buffet line twice or just bad etiquette.

I have thought the same thing. I don't think its unsanitary, but they might be confused. Plates usually indicate a plated meal.

The last wedding I went to had the plates at the table and we just brought them up with us. I had no problem with it. There isn't a different room for my cocktail hour so it has to be in the same room so I don't want the plates to be used or anything like that so I'm leaving them at the buffet table instead. If cocktail hour was in a different space I woyuld have put them on the tables.

I don't see an issue with it, but maybe have extra plates at the buffet table too?

Our caterer only handles the food since it's buffet, we have to do the plates/cups/silverware, etc.

we'll have at least 2 plates per person, so there would be extras at the buffet line for people to get seconds.

Technically it is unsanitary (according to food code)! I would recommemd having plates at the buffet line. I'm also weird about restaurants when they set the menu on my plate... its been so many nasty places-no thank you!!

Instead of putting the dinner plate at the table, would it be possible to have a salad or those gorgeous napkins with the menu in them?

@Thyia lmao the thought made me crack up. My guests for sure would do it. I thought about it at first and while it is a great idea people will totally do it.

If you have plates at places, then where will you put the extra plates? If the extras are at the buffet, people may not realize their first plate is the one sitting there already and grab the one off the buffet
