Plated vs Buffet

So I'm trying to decide whether to have a plated or buffet meal. I want plated and plan to have guests choose their entrees on the rsvp cards. My venue is discouraging this and says people won't be able to be served at the same time so they don't recommend it. They suggest a plate with both a small piece of steak and a small piece of fish. Am I trying to make this too simple or should the different entrees not be that big of a deal?

I've never heard of a duet plate and never seen it, it sounds like a regional thing. We just don't have that in NY. I don't understand why your venue can't serve your guests their meal choice. That's so strange to me.

I personally prefer buffet. With a buffet, everyone can be accommodated and their are a variety of choices to chose from. In my family and many other families I know, they want good food, a variety and they want to leave full and satisfied. No one wants a dual plate. Some people wait all day to eat and they expect delicious and filling food. However, it is up to you. I am learning new things on this site (which is great). I have never heard of a duel plating. I have heard of plates or buffet. Most opt for buffet. It is a personal choice though. Just make sure that you keep in mind that everyone does not eat the same thing and you want your guests to leave satisfied opposed to starved out and disappointed. Good luck on your wedding planning.

@Margarita I think you are right. I am from New York too and I have never heard of this either. It might be a regional thing indeed.

I’ve only been to one wedding with a buffet and the food ran out.

What you’re describing is a duet plate. If they can do a duet, they can do singles. I agree, they are being lazy. Do you have a choice in catering?

@ OliviaP....Then you have a great plan....That's great for you.....My people and most people that I know need a buffet...They want to keep going back for more and they want more than a few choices. That is just for me personally. Not at all knocking people that do this as this works lots of people.

After all this feedback FH and I agreed on single entree plated.

    Thank you everyone!

@OGJessie the choice we have is to not choose this venue as we haven't signed the contract yet but part of why we are choosing this place is the chef is excellent. I think the F&B mgr is just being lazy but I'm sure all will end well.

@ OliviaP I am just curious...Have you ever been to a 5 star steakhouse before or do you think I am talking about Outback or Sizzler? My witnesses are going to a very exclusive steakhouse. It appears that you think that I am referring to a cheap chain steakhouse. If that is the case, perhaps you should broaden your horizons.

Ok..Perhaps you misunderstood. I was giving the OP advice on what I believed can be an option based on prior knowledge and experiences. This was not for my personal wedding because I am not having one. I am absolutely sure that you know that I am eloping and yes, we are having dinner at an exclusive steakhouse. I am sorry if you misunderstood.

Sounds like you put the spoon in the pot. I was being very cordial to you even though I know you were trying to make slick comments. Take the spoon out of the stew so it would be able to simmer down. Again, it is unfortunate that you do not appear to be aware of steakhouses that are top of the line. Again, I urge you to broaden your horizons and know that their are more than Brazillian steakhouse buffets and chain steakhouses such as outback and Sizzler. However, thank you for your well wishes as my witnesses will enjoy steak and lobster in our private room (which is not cheap) overlooking the beautiful waters of my carefully selected location. Thank you

It is plated @OliviaP. The restaurant that I selected does not have buffet options....Most 5 star restaurants do not have a pay once and eat all you can eat options......

I don't really understand the duet plate, and have personally never seen it done before. As a vegetarian, my first question is would there still be a vegetarian option available if everyone is receiving the same meal? My second question is I know a lot of meat eaters that do not eat red meat or do not like seafood, how would they be accommodated? My third question is isn't beef usually ordered to taste, i.e. medium, rare, well done, etc? Also, Why is there no poultry option?

Personally, I prefer a buffet unless the meal is at a restaurant and I can choose my entree.

@Vanessa yes there is a vegetarian option as well when people have duet plates. On the RSVP card people selected vegetarian or Beef/Grouper. Some people wrote in allergies or that they can't have Grouper(Beef only) or are Pescatarians(so Grouper only and no Beef), so we have about 15 meals that are not just Grouper/Beef. ETA: I'm in South Florida...I'm not sure if the duet is regional but I have been to weddings with this option in other states...

@Vanessa, yes there will be a vegetarian option. Nothing is decided yet although I don't feel like I HAVE to offer poultry. I know everyone well enough to know it will be fine. Now my only concern will be getting something for the one plant based eater. Ugh.

Most plated dinner weddings I've been to have actually been duet plates-I'm in southern california. It totally wouldn't phase me if it was placed in front of me (I've had chicken/steak and steak/fish combos). However, I and most of my close friends aren't picky eaters, vegetarian nor have allergies.

I've only been to one buffet wedding which was delicious! However, it did take some time for our table to go get food, but there was plenty for seconds.

All other weddings have been family style plating where you just take what you want.

Honestly buffet. That way our guests can eat at their leisure or take what they want. Our venue gives us three different entree options (if not more). Our guests can get up and have had much as they want!

Duet plates aren't regional and they do exist in NY, particularly in NYC.
