Plastic Tableware & Utensils for reception

MrsDean, on January 5, 2015 at 2:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 46

I've been doing some price comparisons the last few days to get the best deal and Dollar Tree seems to be the best choice. I've ordered from them before, so I trust them over some random seller I've never bought from. I'm ordering the dinner plates, dessert plates and the silver flatware. I figured I'd reach out to you guys before I take the plunge.

Has anyone used the silver flatware from Dollar Tree? The reviews on the site are positive and "durable" was mentioned in nearly every review. I just don't want them breaking as guests are trying to eat.

IMO, not matter what the reviews, eating with plastic utensils ALWAYS sucks.

It's horrible!!! What kind of food are you having?

The last wedding we went to have this same utensils and I complained the whole time because I couldn't cut my chicken. I finally said f it and used my hands.

I don't have any personal knowledge, but some of the plastic plates are pretty realistic, and at less formal weddings, they can work. I wouldn't have any issue with the plastic spoons (they're not meant to do much), but I would urge you to rent some metal flatware for the forks and knives. You don't want forks breaking and you want the knives to do what they're intended to do (if you're having steak or chicken, you should get real knives).

Honestly if you really have to go this route, I'd rather have a paper plate due to environmental reasons. I have no actual comments on dollar tree item quality.

LOL! We'll have to make sure the chicken is tender then! I'll buy a set and try the utensils before I buy. Thanks for the review.

I don't have a problem eating with plastic. Works fine for me (unless the meat is tough and then I don't want it anyway...)

Thanks, Centerpiece. We're not renting metal flatware. I'm perfectly fine with using plastic flatware for the reception (forks & knives included). I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with the quality of the Dollar Tree flatware versus some of the other stores that pop up in a Google search. I'm going to buy a set and use it to see what it's like. But quite frankly, IMO chicken is too tough if you can't cut it with a plastic knife. We're not having steak.

I think you will be fine with the plastic plates, but Im just not sure on the silverware. I have used these type of forks before and they can be difficult to like "stab" into the food with (forks) if that makes sense. I have no idea what it costs to rent metal ones vs. Dollar Tree however. I think you would be smart to buy some and then eat various meals with it for a week or whatever to see how you ultimately like it

Since you're set on your idea, can you buy a set and see what the quality is like? Use it for dinner! Then order more if they're good enough.

Perfect! I do like these silver ones for showers or parties or whatever, bc they do look nice versus plain whites one, so keep us posted. Id probably order some for our upcoming parties if they hold up well for you!

Costco has some that look like real silverware and I use it a lot for holiday meals. They also have nice plastic plates that look real and are durable

We went with the disposable plates and flatware too. We are price conscience and don't want to have to worry about breaking something or having to count the number of forks, spoons, or knives when the wedding is over. I've used dollar tree disposable stuff before and I didn't had any complaints. I did notice that the price is slightly cheaper on amazon for the silver where if you buy it at for the 200 sets. We didn't go with those plates we were able to find some clear plates for a lesser cost. With some good deals and knowing a few people we hare having a 150 guest wedding for less than 5K.

I am doing plastic plates and silverware also. However I am going with the all clear ones from Sam's club. I am also going this route since it's a laid back wedding with the food being shredded pork bbq, potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, corn, rollsand I think we have a couple other things but can't think at the moment.

We are using plastic for our cocktail hour and dessert bar, but renting silverware for our sit down dinner because of the filet mignon. I was going to buy the silver plastic but my caterer recommended the clear. She didn't say why but I trust her opinion. I agree with your idea of purchasing a set and trying them out first before you buy the whole amount that you need.
