Planning Milestones--save The Dates

Cristy, on January 6, 2020 at 4:49 PM Posted in Planning 0 3

FYI: this is kind of long, but a good story. Just goes to show you that even the most meticulous planning can go haywire sometimes.

We did it!! We finally sent our Save the Dates, and although it started out ok, it was kind of a bumpy road! First, our wedding photographer offered STDs as a promotion on the package when we booked her. So, once we had our engagement photos done, we picked the design we wanted, and the photos we wanted to use on the STD. Photographer put a few mock ups together, and we picked the one we liked best. She had them printed, and sent to us. Well, this was still about 6 months early, since I'm a planner, and like to get things done early. So, there they sat, untouched, for several months. Finally, the time to send them was getting closer, so I started making sure I had all my addresses. I had most, but still had to bug a few people to get them all. Once that was done, I marked a date on the calendar that I wanted to send them out. It was going to be the weekend after Thanksgiving. All is well, right? NOT!!

My daughter's boyfriend came over the day after Thanksgiving and went with us to pick out our Christmas tree. We always get it the day after Thanksgiving. Well, he didn't look too good, and when I asked him if he was ok, he said he was just feeling a little "under the weather" but that he would be fine. So, I just didn't get too close, and went about my day. We got the tree, put it up, got the lights on, and I started to feel a bit feverish and achy, so I said that we could put the ornaments on the tree the next day. Ok............24 hours later, my entire household was really sick!! FH, me, my daughter and my 2 yr old granddaughter, all sick with the worst flu I've had in years!! omg. Turns out daughter's boyfriend had Influenza A (highly contagious strain this year), and gave it to us! Then after about a week in bed, everyone else in the house was getting better, while I was getting worse. So, FH took me to the ER, where it was discovered I had pneumonia! Yay! Ok, so another week and a half down, but I finally get better. Only to realize, I HAVEN'T SENT OUR STDs!!!!! Oh no, they should have gone out two weeks ago! I haven't even started addressing them (it was my Thanksgiving weekend project), and they are so late!

Oh well, not to worry. I did freak out initially, but FH pointed out that there was nothing I could do about getting sick, and there was no way I could have gotten them out in that condition, and at least it wasn't the invitations. I didn't even eat for more than a week, and ended up losing 12 pounds. He was right. So, I got to work on them right away, and FINALLY got them mailed almost a month later than I wanted, but at least they went. Thankfully, our wedding is local, so no real travel for our guests. Whew.

For me, even the simplest wedding planning task turn out to be a hassle! It took me a month to make 2 bouquets of fake flowers because I kept having issues. I was constantly running to the craft store, and I had to completely rip mine apart and re-build it at one point. I just recently ordered a photo book to display, and when it arrived today- the cover photo was cropped wrong and cut off FH’s face!! Now I have to get that fixed. ☹️

Oh no! Though I'm sure it feels crummy to get behind on a wedding task, the important thing is that you're feeling better now! I'm sure your guests won't even notice that your STDs were late at all, and would just be concerned primarily with your health.
We've been oscillating between mid-size wedding and micro wedding since September (or earlier??) so not having a finalized guest list or even idea of size has me a little stressed right now (wedding stuff has been on the back burner for several months while some major life changes have been happening simultaneously). I guess life doesn't stop just because we're planning weddings! I keep checking things off the check list as best I can though 🤷 STDs are the next major item for us, we're 8 months out and everyone will need to travel. I know it'll all get done eventually 😊
    Good luck Cristy!

    Hi Jennifer,

Yes, thank you, I am feeling much better! You're right, life does not stop just because we have weddings to plan!

Things are good, everyone is healthy again. But I feel like I'm a month behind now! I was doing so well too. Oh well, s*&t happens! I'm just glad that I had most of the major stuff already done/planned, so I'm not really as far behind as I thought. It just feels so weird going back to work, getting back into normal life after being down for so long! But you are right, that life happens, life changes, we all have lives and jobs and kids and things that take our focus away from our wedding planning. But it will all get done eventually. I figure if it doesn't, it wasn't that important anyway! I'm trying to be a chill bride, not a bridezilla!

Thanks for the encouragement! Good luck and happy planning!!
