Planning a wedding away from family

Kyndal, on September 6, 2019 at 6:20 PM Posted in Planning 0 5
Hello all! So I recently moved to Salt Lake City about a month ago from Birmingham, AL. When thinking about planning my wedding I had some questions about what people do when planning a wedding in a new city far away from friends and family. We haven’t decided on whether we want to have the wedding here or try to go back home. One of the biggest questions I have is... what should I do about shopping for my wedding dress? Since we’re in a new place, I don’t really have any close friends yet and I’d like to shop for my dress here since there’s a lot better options here. Should I try and get my mom/a few friends to fly out to come with me, go alone (not fun), or just bite the bullet and try to do the dress shopping when I go home for a holiday so that it’s easier for people to join me? Looking for some advice form people who may have done the same thing. Thank you!!!

Welcome to SLC! First I loved Mary's Bridal, but there are so many bridal salons. I would get a dress locally because pick up and alterations are easier.

I’m from North Carolina but I live in Colorado. I bought my dress in NC and then my mom picked it up and shipped it to me so I could have it altered. I’ll have to ship it back and my moh will steam it. I probably would have been just as happy shopping in Colorado alone for the amount of hassle it’s been. I left my diy decor at my parents house and I have a few things to ship still. I occasionally text my friends for opinions but it’s honestly been nice making my own plans with no pressure. I read about these girls whose friends and family are overly picky and involved and I have no worries there.

Shop online first and narrow the choices down.

Then, see which shop has the majority of your choices.

You can set up an appt to see the ones that really speak to your soul.

By the time that you need to order, hopefully you’ll have at least a neighbor or co-worker that can go with you to hold your phone while you facetime or Duo your Mom or someone else back home and those in AL can be in one group.

    Congratulations and 🍀‼️

I live in Oregon and my family lives in Massachusetts. We went shopping while I was home for the winter holidays and had the dress shipped to me at home. I ended up buying a dress in then even though I didn’t have a date or a venue yet. I got my dress at BHLDN and the person assisting us noted they they get a lot of people shopping at the holidays because family and friends are together, so they had more limited stock and appointments available. I did also go on a spontaneous weekday lunch trip to a consignment bridal shop in my city with a friend, which was fun but I would’ve been comfortable doing it by myself too since I was having some momentary dress regret. Good luck!
