Pizza Reception

I'm serving pizza at my wedding reception! I want it to be gourmet, not like average pizza. Has anyone else done this or attended a reception that served pizza? How was it, too casual or no? What do I serve with it? Any advice helps! Thanks in advance!

If you like it...do it! We had pizza for our engagement party bc it was a big part of our relationship and everyone loved it. We have a lot of gourmet pizza places in San Diego.

My cousin and his wife did a pizza buffet with salads and pasta also and it was awesome!! The wedding and reception were still very fancy and the pizza was a hit!

One of our stations during cocktail hour will be flatbread pizza. If I could eat pizza every day and not gain 1000lb I would.

I've never been to a wedding where pizza was the actual meal. I agree with PPs if you're going to do this, definitely offer a few other choices for those with allergies. Salad would be nice too.

Are you doing a cocktail hour with appetizers? If so, what would that be before they're served pizza?

We are having pizza. The company is bringing a wood oven to our site and making them there. We are also having them do appetizers: stuffed mushrooms, brushetta, meatballs, and roasted artichoke . We are having a rather casual wedding but super excited.

You could do the lobster caviar Pizza. Saw an article about it and it was like $1000 per Pizza!

Maybe the price will make it fancy but Pizza is just casual no matter how you spin it.

I think it depends on the rest of your plans. If you're thinking a traditional wedding, with toasts, dances, a fancy dress, bar (please); thats not enough variety even with a lot of toppings. We do lots of weddings with pizza at the cocktail hour, but for the whole thing, I personally think you need more.

I'm doing breakfast/brunch foods for ours. It's typically seen as casual but everyone I've told is super pumped! I say go for pizza but have something else too like salads, maybe some type of chicken, Mac and cheese...something to go on the side!

I would be so down with gourmet pizzas for dinner, but if someone has allergies to a key ingredient (like gluten, or tomato, etc.) then they'd be out of luck. Definitely try to have some variety just in case.

I'm so torn. On one hand, it's your wedding and shouldn't it have a special meal to reflect the specialness of the day, not just some variation on what you had last Thursday? On the other hand, it's PIZZA. And pizza is so good.

We are having a caterer who does mobile wood fire pizza on site, which means it's cooked right there and served immediately. They were on our venue's recommended caterer list. They do have vegetarian and gluten free options. They use several toppings, some of which are standard and others which are more gourmet and unique. They also serve salad and we are ordering antipasti for appetizers. I say as long as it's along these lines, and it isn't boxes of Domino's, you're fine. We are doing a more casual, rustic setting, so it fits.

I am definitely doing gourmet pizzas, I had planned on shrimp scampi, sun dried tomato, turkey avocado, etc. And I was planning on having fruit and veggie trays as well as a choice of tossed or Cesar salad. It will be a buffet, so the pizza will be on heaters until the guests come to get it. My reception is still going to be very fancy, white and blush everything, I'm just scared it will make it much more casual than I'd like

My sister and my good friend each did fire grilled pizzas at their weddings. They were great but, they were both rather casual backyard style weddings.

If you want fancy, the pizza will be more casual than you hope for.

I haven't been to one that has, but considered doing it for my wedding because I thought it would be fun and different. Look for caterers that could do wood fired pizza or a food truck - I've seen some out there. We ended up doing burgers and fries, milkshakes, and salads. Might be casual and unconventional but people loved it!

Pizza could be a late night snack for those wanting a more formal event.

I agree with PPs, if you're wanting "fancy," this is going to be too casual, even if it is artisan.

One of my close friends had a local pizza place cater her wedding. It was delicious, definitely much better pizza than any chain, and I didn't feel it was too informal. However, I'm a pretty casual person overall so maybe my opinion isn't the best.

Still, I thought it was great.

We're doing pizza but we plan on it being casual. We'll also have pastas, meatballs, and other Italian cuisine catered through them though.

Pizza is too casual for us, and WAY too messy.

One of my very good friends got married at a brewery near where they live and go all the time, and had pizza, salad and bread for her dinner and it was perfect because that is who they are as a couple. I would say yes, pizza can definitely work for the main course, just offer a few sides that will go well with it like a Caesar salad and bread.
