Pizza Reception

Nichole, on September 18, 2016 at 11:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 49

I'm serving pizza at my wedding reception! I want it to be gourmet, not like average pizza. Has anyone else done this or attended a reception that served pizza? How was it, too casual or no? What do I serve with it?

Any advice helps! Thanks in advance!

Someone else had recently talked about having pizza at their reception. It is a little too casual for a wedding, but I also love pizza so I probably wouldn't care that much. If you are set on pizza, maybe you should have pasta or something other than pizza to add variety?

I've never been to a reception with pizza but I don't see how you can make it not casual. You could serve lobster pizza and I think it's still casual. If you are okay with that go for it! Who doesn't love pizza? I think a Caesar salad would go nicely with most pizza.

^ What is a lobster pizza? Like, lobster meat on the pizza? Is that a thing or are you just using it as an example?

We looked at gourmet pizza but the logistics of keeping it warm, fresh and crispy while getting to everyone was tricky.

We decided on a catering company which set up a Buffett of Italian food and summery sides instead. Which worked well.

We did pizza, salad, wine/beer for the welcome dinner!

I wouldn't offer solely pizza at your reception, for the same reason that I wouldn't offer solely chicken, vegetarian meals, beef, etc; not everyone likes that. I know, I know, I was shocked when I heard someone tell me the other day they didn't like pizza. I never thought I'd hear the words, "I hate pizza" in my life, but I did.

Anyways, if your venue comes with catering, ask about doing a gourmet pizza bar. Where I work offers it for cocktail hour or as a "grand finale"/late-night snack deal for guests. If you wanted that as part of the dinner service, they'd be the people to ask about a kick-ass menu to compliment it.

If you're using outside catering services, like an Italian place, ask about some pasta dishes, chicken, meatballs, etc.

Personally, I'd use gourmet pizza as a cocktail hour/late-night snack offering, but to each his own. I say, go full-on Italian, and have some pizza for your guests to snack on! Smiley smile

I've only seen pizza as a late night snack. I'd be fine with pizza for dinner but in a casual setting. If everything else was super fancy I don't think the pizza would be fitting.

If it is really good pizza (like &pizza in DC, that has a unique gourmet feel to it), I'd be happy. But you are likely going to get some mixed opinions.

Pizza would be awesome as a late night snack! For me it's too controversial as the main entree for a reception.

There's a few vendors in my area with portable wood fire ovens and they'll cook personal or family style pizzas for guests. I thought it looked rustic and pretty original, and I personally would prefer that the standard chicken or beef option! If it ties in and fits your look and feel- go for it! You can serve salad and some pasta dishes with it for a more well rounded meal.

I've been to one event that did pizza- it was not a wedding, but a relatively formal charity fundraiser. The biggest downside was that it was too slow. There's a company in my area that has a massive brick oven trailer and will come do brick oven pizza for events. It was delicious and fun, but took forever. They couldn't keep the pizza coming fast enough for the guests

I love pizza. Yes, I would marry pizza. This would be a great option for the rehearsal dinner, cocktail hour, or late night snack if you're having a more traditional wedding. The only issue I see is that your venue may not be able to prepare the pizzas as they are meant to be served. I would not want soggy pizza.

This obviously doesn't apply to everyone or even the majority, but some people have gluten allergies so if you have a gluten only dinner (pizza and pasta) with gluten only dessert (cake/cupcakes) they literally can't eat anything at your wedding. I would have some other dinner option in addition to the pizza or at least some kind of sides or a salad. Just a thought.

As someone who can't have gluten I would be really bummed if the only food was pizza and pasta. Most weddings I do fine at because of all of the options so I would just make sure there are plenty. Maybe you could do another casual main option to go with it like a taco bar or something

It's a thing Weddingbelle. If you go to a restaurant with gourmet pizza the toppings are more like lobster, caviar, prosciutto, etc.

Is there an artisan pizza food truck that you can get in contact with in your area?

Erin, I can't eat pizza so I never realized that was a thing. Pretty cool though.

I think crab on top of an Alfredo sauce on pizza sounds amazing! Or shrimp scampi! I'm hungry. Lol!

We're doing wood fire grilled pizzas. They are more "gourmet" than your average dominos and we are having salads, breadsticks and pasta for sides! We are ecstatic and it definitely works with our crowd/wedding.
