Pizza at the reception: fun/unique or trashy?

Having a really hard time trying to decide what to do for catering. I've seen a lot of things on Pinterest for food bars like burgers, tacos, etc and like that idea for our more casual theme. We're having an Italian restaurant do the food for our rehearsal dinner, so I thought about asking them if they would do a pizza bar for the wedding reception. It's a nice restaurant so it's not like we're ordering pizza from Dominos or something. I've seen a few things on social media with positive reviews, my only worry is that my mother will throw the biggest fit (she's already upset that we aren't having a black-tie affair). Do you know anyone who has done pizza at their wedding? Are you planning to do it yourself? Please share!

Ours is indoor and we're doing pizza and salad. That was the first thing we decided together. Well, that and our date.

Personally, though I love it? It's too much like Wednesday and not enough like Wedding. And for those people traveling, buying clothes, buying a gift?

Two pieces of pizza and a salad?

    No.

Pizza would be fine, for me personally, but make sure to ask your guests. They might have allergies you aren't aware of.

We are starting with a sit down salad and then having the pizza bar. The actual bar is fully stocked as well.

As long as it is good, I don't see anything wrong with it. Of course, the tone of the reception will be more laid back. I will scream if you want me to eat it with folk and knife! Smiley smile

I'd be stoked on pizza. We're doing gourmet burgers from a food truck.

Went to a wedding where they had pizza for the late night snack and it was AMAZING. Seriously never been happier! That being said I think it would have been a little ho-hum as the main meal.

BBQ chicken pizza is my favorite! Gourmet pizza sounds awesome and maybe get 1 or 2 Gluten free/ Vegetarian pizzas to accommodate people with sensitivities. Smiley smile

We had Pizza at my cousins reception.. hours after dinner ended. It was probably 11pm but we were still going strong on the dance floor. It was amazing!

We're actually doing gourmet pizza at our reception, but we have 26 people invited (probably 20 coming) and we know our crowd.

It's a relaxed dinner and we know that the pizza from this particular place is amazing. If we were doing something more formal or had more people coming, I probably wouldn't be going the pizza route...

ETA: Just wanted to say that I'm actually really excited for the pizza, too!

LOL, your mother is having a fit that it isn't a black tie affair? Well, announce pizza, throw her a box of Kleenex, and then take cover in the basement. It's going to be ugly (and if she's paying -- or contributing -- for the food, she has a right to freak out).

Sorry, I'm never going to get behind pizza as a wedding entree. You may not care, but I'm guessing a percentage of your guests will care.

Pizza is totally cool at the rehearsal dinner. Pizza is what happens when a couple is talking on the phone while driving home after work. "Hey, what do you want to do for dinner?" He says, "Let's just order from Guida's -- pepperoni okay?" She replies, "Yeah, sure. You picking it up, or am I? Screw it, let them deliver it. You order it, I'm 10 minutes from home. Oh, order a garlic cheese bread...I was in meetings all day and skipped lunch. I'm starving."

When that same couple celebrate their a birthday or anniversary, guess where they're not going? That's right -- the local pizza place. They'll go to a seafood place with an excellent rep or a steakhouse. Why? Because we, as human beings, equate delicacies with celebrations.

For most Americans, the quick, easy, and cheap is pizza -- delivered or ordered three to four times a month. It slays McDonalds and Burger King. but it's still in the category of fast food.

Unless you plan to hire true Italian gourmet chefs who can take pizza to a level most of us haven't enjoyed, just pass. It has the connotation of a white box that says, "You've tried the rest, now try the best!" If you are speaking to Italian catering companies, ask them about their pasta dishes. They can create inexpensive and amazing meals. I adore Italian food, and with my Irish family, Italian is never on the wedding menu (unless it's served at cocktail hour, among many other offerings).

Just to clarify -- pizza served after dinner rocks! I'd love to be offered anything a few hours after dinner -- whether it was a taco, a slice of pizza, or a slider.

I'm gonna echo keeping it to a late night snack. I think your guests might be dissapointed if pizza was the only thing on the menuSmiley smile I agree a pasta bar might be more appropriateSmiley smile we did Italian too and it was awesome.

We thought about fancy pizzas. But decided against it in the end because of the logistic nightmare of it. There's just not a good way to keep it warm unless they are bringing a mobile pizza oven and you have a station that serves one pizza at a time.

We went with an Italian Buffett instead. :3

My FH is dying to do pizza. But like Kels said, keeping it warm was my biggest concern! We love the idea of non traditional reception food like a taco bar too! Pizza as a late night snack is a fun idea!

We went to a semi-formal wedding last year that served pizza. FH and I thought it was a great idea. The pizza's were brought to the table and not served at a buffet, which I think elevated the presentation. They also had GF options, as well as veggie and meat ones.

I think it is perfectly fine to do pizza (maybe do gourmet ones, not just meat lovers, etc)
