Pizza at the reception: fun/unique or trashy?

MrsBeaudrytoBe, on August 20, 2016 at 9:01 PM Posted in Planning 1 54

Having a really hard time trying to decide what to do for catering. I've seen a lot of things on Pinterest for food bars like burgers, tacos, etc and like that idea for our more casual theme. We're having an Italian restaurant do the food for our rehearsal dinner, so I thought about asking them if they would do a pizza bar for the wedding reception. It's a nice restaurant so it's not like we're ordering pizza from Dominos or something. I've seen a few things on social media with positive reviews, my only worry is that my mother will throw the biggest fit (she's already upset that we aren't having a black-tie affair). Do you know anyone who has done pizza at their wedding? Are you planning to do it yourself? Please share!

Pizza is pizza. I don't care how fancy the restaurant. Pizza is pizza.

Is your wedding laid back? How many guests? Outside or inside?

My cousin was planning on having a pizza wedding. I reminded her that there are people that are lactose/gluten intolerant and could not eat normal pizza.

If you do this, make sure you have either alternative pizzas (that cannot be mixed up with regular) or other food options for all guests.

There are also some people, such as myself, who are not very big fans of pizza!

Hahaha this made me smile because FH kept joking about us having a pizza party reception... I was like hells no! But trust me, he'd want Pizza Hut so....

We compromised and will have it the night before. (We cant have it at our venue anyway)

I really think it depends on what kind of pizza and how its presented.

Could you have the restaurant do a pasta bar instead? Pasta seems a bit more wedding appropriate to me, but would still be casual and cost effective.

For me, it depends on what type of pizza and if it is served in a way that is easy to eat. Something like &Pizza (in DC) I would be more than happy with at a wedding.

I'm having a pizza bar at my wedding because it is my FH favorite food and with him being so picky it worked out perfectly. I find it fun and provides something that the kids will eat as well. My venue is doing the catering and our planner has been helping make it look classy while having fun. I don't see a reason in paying so much money per plate when my groom wouldn't be eating it.

I love pizza, I grew up in NY.....but IMO it's too messy for at a wedding.

Artisan pizza along with other food choices would be delicious, but it needs to be really good pizza. Also, how many guests are you having? The key to having pizza is to have a small guest list. You could have pizza as a late night snack for the guests, instead of having it at dinner.

Honestly, I love pizza and I love love when people do new things. If it's done right, it could be a hit.

Thanks to all who have commented so far! It's going to be an outdoor wedding, maybe around 75 people. I just like the idea of putting a fancier twist on something we both love and it would be super easy. To my knowledge, none of our guests have lactose/gluten sensitivity so that's not really an issue, but I would want to have at least one other food option with it as well as sides. Perhaps it would be better to do it at the rehearsal and then do chicken/eggplant parm or pasta at the wedding. Please keep your ideas and opinions coming!

A lot of my venues do it for cocktail hour. But since I'm in venues, I don't think I'd see pizza weddings.

    Rehearsal? Of course.

Since it is an outdoor wedding, see if there are any pizza trucks in your area. Those are usually gourmet and a huge hit at any party
