Pittsburgh Opera House - Venue

Private User, on January 15, 2013 at 7:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

I'm getting married in Spring 2014. I just went to look at the Pittsburgh Opera House as my reception venue. I fell in love with it's industrial look. My theme is very rustic and less formal and I'm doing a lot of my decor, like centerpieces, myself. My only concern is the stress of bringing in my own caterer, alcohol/beverages/cups/bar napkins/ice, linens, tableware, etc.

I feel like the little things will add up, in both price and work, making it stressful working with all different vendors, but I really think I can save a lot of money compared to a hotel wedding.

Has anyone had their wedding there/been to a wedding there? I'm open to any suggestions on how I can make it work (stress-free), since it's not all all-inclusive. I'm looking for a vendor who can do all-in-one (i.e. catering/linens/beverages/tableware/ice).

Not there, but we do a lot of weddings in places similar to what you describe. More work? Maybe. It depends on you, and the venue staff. Some can be very helpful. Other staff, it's "here's what we do, the rest of the stuff you're on you're own. Have a nice day." Get a wedding planner WHO HAS WORKED IN THAT VENUE PREVIOUSLY and things will go very smoothly. As for as the cost, that depends. Since no two venues are exactly equal it's difficult to say whether the cost will be more or less. Also, this place sounds like a blank palette, which means you may get more stuff to personalize it, BUT it will be more personal than a banquet hall or hotel with no personality. The end result may be a more spectacular wedding.

I'm also in Pittsburgh, but know nothing about the venue. It sounds interesting though.

Remo's Catering on Babcock is fantastic to work with, and their prices are reasonable.

I know that people have used JCP events there. My photographer had her wedding there recently, and DIY's a lot of the stuff and had her bridal party help set it all up the night before, and some the morning of.

Thanks, Laura. It's funny you say that because I'm actually looking at that same photographer to do my wedding, and just realized she for married there, too! Did you like her/her work?

I want to warn anyone who is thinking about having their reception at the Pittsburgh Opera House. My wedding reception was scheduled there and we cancelled, losing thousands of dollars in deposits (you bring in your own vendors), and it was still totally worth it. Sean (the even coordinator) is absolutely impossible to get a hold of. I would leave voicemails, send emails, leave messages with the receptionist and still wouldn't hear back from him for weeks. Finally, after feeling uncomfortable and worried for over a month of not hearing from him i sent him an email canceling. He responded to this email right away however it was too late to fix the problem. I have since talked to a few other brides having the same problem with him. It is a venue that you have to do a lot of planning by yourself and it's hard to do that when Sean will not get back to you to answer questions. It is a very unique venue and we loved that but it is not worth the hassle.

Hi Brittany, I am looking into having my wedding at the Opera House as well. I haven't booked anything yet, so I wanted to see if you have had the same trouble with Sean, their event coordinator, as Anne mentioned above.

I had the same issues with Sean that Anne had. We went to look at the venue in September and decided to book it. Sean said he would get the contract to us "shortly." I emailed him every few weeks to find out when we would be receiving it and he would say he was working on it and that we would have it soon. I wasn't extremely concerned at first since my wedding was so far off but now that it's under a year away we have decided to book elsewhere. I haven't heard from Sean since early January.
