Picking a wedding dress

Clare, on July 13, 2019 at 8:44 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
I’m normally a really decisive person. Literally my job is to make high-level decisions. But this wedding dress thing has me all turned upside down. We’re both very fashionable people who like to dress up. He’s wearing a very handsome custom tux we had designed for him last year, so he’s all set but for a few new pieces. I however am up to my eyeballs in tulle and lace and have now completely lost the thread entirely on what I should wear.

I know I’ve made a few grave mistakes in the process (went to too many shops, tried on too many dresses, looked at too much Pinterest). This week I’d decided the issue was that many dresses had components of what I liked, but none married them all together (pun intended), so I was going to design my own. Got some sketches made, and was happily going to lay down my deposit... when I made the most grave error of them all.

I found myself a little nervous that maybe he wouldn’t LIKE the dress. So I went through a site with all kinds of dresses with him and asked him to describe what he liked and didn’t like about whatever dress he wanted to talk about. Then he pointed out three specific things that I’m having done on my dress that he doesn’t like.

I know it’s not going to actually matter and I should do what I want because, well it’s my dress, but I need someone to talk me out of the tree so I can just order this darn thing and feel a little less anxious for the next 4-6 months while it gets made.

I'm telling you now, your FH might say he doesn't like something on a dress but it will look different on you. He will think you look beautiful in anything, I promise. Find the dress that makes you feel like a bride and go for it! If you hate it, alterations can always be made. I'm completely changing the bodice of my dress because I decided last minute that I hated the V neck. It's your day and you will look beautiful in what makes you feel beautiful!

My FH’s only input was that he didn’t want me in anything “too poofy,” so I went dress shopping and my mom and daughter pick huge ball gowns for me to try 😆. If I fell in love with a ball gown, I’m positive he would still love me in it. Your FH isn’t going to be analyzing your dress, he’s going to be looking at you, and if you feel beautiful in your dress that’s what matters. Get what makes you feel radiant and that will show. Good luck with your custom dress!

Have you gone and tried gowns on? If not then I would suggest you do. It’s ALOT different than looking up gowns on Pinterest and here- “TRUST ME, I’m a Bridal model”( like trust me ima Dr” lol) But, seriously, read my Dress 101 thing.

Why didn't he like those parts? And are they ones that would kill you not to get? If not switch up and go for his idea, but, if so, keep your original vision.

But, ultimately if the gown you’ve desgned makes your head, heart and tumtum happy( and seems to be what FH would like too!) GET IT! Be happy and know you have a one of a kind stunner- and trust me all he’s gonna be thinking is how long till he can get ya outta it! At least if he’s anything like my dude!

Thank you. That’s good advice. I feel like there’s a lot of pressure to order the dress so early, but they don’t talk about how you can make changes not too far out via alternations! Smiley heart

Hahaha. Isn’t it funny how people always want to see you in a ball gown? One of my girlfriends did the same to me. I’m VERY petite and it looked ridiculous. I think you’re right, I need to FEEL good to look good. You all are the best!

Yes. I have tried on WAY too many at this point. I think you’re spot on, if I feel good, the gown will look good. Plus, my FH is just going to cry through the whole wedding anyway, so he won’t be able to see me in focus.

And yes, his ‘ideas’ would kill the original design. But I think you’re right, he just doesn’t see them correctly in the photos.

I say go for the one that will make you comfortable and happy- not just now & on the day, but also for years to come when you look at the pictures. He will love it on you- because YOU are in it!

At least your FH gave you some kind of feedback xD mine just said “white and weddingy” when I asked if he had any preferences or ideas. I’m sure he’ll love you in whatever you wear. Confidence is half the job of pulling off a wedding dress. If you feel good, you’ll look good.

I am in a similar boat and was getting anxious about the dress, trying on many, taking the fun out of it. I finally just ordered it and feel better. Just order the dress and obsess over something else!
