Pearls....love/hate relationship.

Carly, on January 18, 2012 at 7:38 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

Okay I am a BM in my friends wedding in June and she is also in my wedding. I am trying to not be super-opinionated, so I have come here to have a mini-vent about pearls.

My BM wants us to wear pearls in her wedding. This is like the 3rd wedding I have had to wear pearls in and it literally makes me want to vomit. I hate pearls...I think they are so ugly and old fashioned. On other people, I think they can look very pretty. But on me, I hate them. I literally feel like they are burning my skin with their hideous-ness when I put them on...lol maybe I am exaggerating.

I guess I just think pearls are so trite and these days its so easy to get awesome looking jewelry for BM for not very much money. I guess I just wish people were more creative or festive or something.

My BM is definitely a minimalist so for her wedding, it works.

This concludes my mini-vent. Thank you for reading, tune in next time to see a mini-vent on whatever random fashion accessory will bother me next week

I'm not a huge fan of pearls either, although I think they can be done well, but it's her wedding and she should have what she wants. Smiley smile

I'm not either, but I will be wearing my grandmother's pearls on my wedding day... Every female in the family has worn them, and my grandmother recently passed away so I feel it's a nice way to honor her.

Otherwise, I'm on the same page with you!

I kept thinking I wanted pearls and wanted my girls to wear pearls UNTIL I found some great Agate necklaces for super cheap... The pearl thought is LONG-LONG gone!

@Jessica what is agate? it sounds amazing...i will go ahead and thank you on behalf of your bridesmaids for not making them wear pearls. lol!

@Joy I can understand if they are of sentimental value, I think that is so sweet and touching. However, Liz Claiborne fake pearl bracelets that are too tight for my wrists are not touching or sweet! lol!

@SemiSweet...i will wear them and try to look happy about it for her wedding! lol!

Some of your post is completely contradictory, but that aside... I would have never expected to be wearing pearls for my wedding! My grandmother was moving from her apartment to a seniors residence (not a nursing home) so she was getting rid of a lot of things and gave me a set of pearls that my grandfather had given her for anniversary, saying that if I wanted to wear them for my wedding, I could but she would understand if I didn't. Well of course I am going to wear them! Then my parents got my pearl studs to match (and I haven't worn studs since I got my ears pierced, I love dangley earrings!) but of course I will wear them too!

I am so not making my girls wear pearls though. If they are real, they are nice but I am not spending, or making them spend that much to get real pearls! If they are fake, I think they look fake, especially next to real ones.

My E ring happens to be a pearl so....I am a big fan! I love feeling confident knowing my ring is completely conflict free Smiley smile So at least you can sooth your burning skin with that fact that pearls tend to be more eco- friendly then other gems...like diamonds!

To each their own taste wise but hey you can dress the bride in whatever you want for your wedding! Maybe that will bring you some comfort LOL.

@Mags..i understand about the eco-friendly thing! I got a lab-manufactured diamond just for that purpose. So, that makes me dislike pearls a little less!

@Judith...i know that whole post was contradictory, thats why I said "love/hate relationship" I think when they have meaning they are nice, or if that is what the bride always wears I can understand, and on some people I think they look so classy and pretty. But on me, it just looks like I am trying too hard or something. They are just the opposite of my style.

It wasn't so much the love/hate thing, that was kind of obvious, but when you said they are ugly then that they are pretty in the very next sentence, it doesn't make sense. I'm sorry, I'm being nit-picky, and I am totally not trying to cause drama. I get what you mean. Just ignore me.

I love pearls! I love the old fashionedness(I know that's not a real word). I see a lot of wedding sets that are just too flashy for me, but others think they are fabulous. To each their own. Just hold your peace. If you don't like them that's fine, but others do so maybe don't word it quite so strongly. I don't have a sentimental reason, I just like the look of them. Just like a lot of brides don't have a reason for liking rhinestone sets, or jewelry made out of lace, or paper, or whatever material that they don't normally wear. It's bit unfair to judge pearls by that criteria and not any other wedding jewelry.

Agate is a kind of stone fyi.

I love pearls (i.e. my profile picture) maybe it because they are such a big deal in the South IDK, but I do think that they can dress up any outfit. I really don't care what jewelry my bridesmaids wear as long as they don't come in looking like Mr. T.

I love pearls and the classiness, elegance and sophistication they bring to outfits. Even faux pearls make an awesome statement to outfits. What I did was email the ones my MOH would like (she's my kid sis) and let her pick out what she likes. She's lucky I'm not asking her to wear jewelry with her birthstone (November - Citrine/Topaz) which she really hates. LOL

@akmprvn my MOH's birthstone is Topaz and she HATES it as well. That's really weird!

@FMRosemond that's hysterical. BTW, random story, I saw Mr T in Chicago once. We were on a Griswold-style family road trip when I was a kid, and I looked out the window and there he was in a red convertible, stuck in the same traffic jam 2 lanes over. He had gold necklaces piled up to his ears. I pity the fool who was driving in his blind spot, I don't know how he would have turned his head. True story.

I don't care what jewelry my BMs wear either. I don't understand when BMs have to match 100% from tip to toe. I find it sort of creepy. Just IMO.
