Paying for cake cutting??

Kat, on August 3, 2016 at 1:06 AM Posted in Planning 0 29

Did you guys pay the caterers to cut and serve your cake or did you do it yourself/have a family member do it for free?? I'm debating which to do because if we did it ourself that's a lot of cake to cut and serve to worry about making sure everyone has a piece. If we paid the catering to do it we wouldn't have to worry about all of that, stress off our backs. They want $50 to cut and pass out the cake. What do you guys think? Did you guys pay for it? And was it worth it if you did? Thanks in advance.

$50 is super worth. I don't want to make my family work AT ALL on our wedding day. PLUS I don't trust my family to properly know how to slice wedding cake so that everyone gets a piece. I could do it, but I don't want to. So I'll be paying someone.

It's also for the caterer to provide little plates and forks and extra napkins. If you do it yourself you need to buy plastic or rent china.

It's $1.50/person at our venue...even if we hand out cupcakes (which is what we're doing). $50 is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I paid the venue $1/slice to cut and serve. It was worth it to me.

I'm paying $1.50/person as well...I would never want a family member working during my wedding, especially to save ME $50. Nope. My time and respect for my friends and family is worth more than that.

Also, like Bryce said, I wouldn't trust them to cut it correctly.

We didn't have to pay anything, but I would definitely pay. I wouldn't want a family member to do it instead of enjoying themselves. Plus they should know how to cut the pieces just right. I would say $50 well spent.

Cake cutting fees are pretty standard, and for $50, you're making out like a bandit. It would cost me thrice as much... hence my cupcake tower. Smiley winking

You really answered your own question when you wrote, "that's a lot of cake to cut and serve to worry about making sure everyone has a piece". The fee is not ridiculous, and in the overall scheme of things, it's far better to drop two twenties and a ten than it is to get family members involved in cutting and serving.

It is included in our venue package. Even if it weren't, I'd pay to have it done. MOB did it at my cousin's wedding (which was everything tacky you can think of - not even a cash bar, but a cooler in the parking lot).

Totally normal. And it's not just a cutting fee, it covers the plates and silverware. Even if you bring cake to a restaurant there is typically a cutting fee.

ETA: $50 is a good deal. Mine is $2 pp

$50 is well worth it. There's a special way you have to cut tiered cakes and you want to make sure you have enough for everyone. On top of that, they are serving it for you so no one in your family has to serve it and guests don't have to walk up and get their own piece.

When negotiating my venue, I asked for that $1.75pp fee to be waived, it was. $50 isn't that much money but all the small fees start adding up.

Ours is free but I would still pay for it.

I can barely serve 2 people without getting food on me somewhere. Cake is especially messy. And they'll probably be dressed up. Plus, it can hard work for a large party.

Definitely worth it. The venue will provide plates, forks, napkins. There is also a specific way to cut a wedding cake to achieve the number of servings indicated, and not everyone knows how to do that.

Well worth it. We have to pay $125 (up to 100 guests) or $175 (100+ guests)

I mean $50 isn't terrible. I don't know how many guests you have, but even with 50 guests it's only a dollar per person. When we were looking at venues some charged for that, some didn't. Our venue does it as a complimentary service.
