Outdoor Ceremony sound issues, PLEASE HELP THIS STRESSED BRIDE!!! :(

futureafu, on March 23, 2010 at 11:00 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

Ok guys, so I just found out from my venue that the outdoor ceremony site does not have a power outlet! They do however have one 110 V outlet that is pretty far that they claim could possibly have extenstion cords ran from it but also claim it is not much power. I am clueless about this stuff so here is what all we need power for, maybe SOMEONE can help me! We need my dj to be able to plug in his equipment to play the ceremony music cd. We also need sound for the officiant and us to be heard while we are saying our vows. What can I do? I dont think a battery operated boom box will reach as far as we need it; its about 100 feet at most from where we will be to the end of our aisles. What have all of you DIY outdoor wedding ceremony brides done for sound and music?! PLEASE HELP!, ANYONE! Thanks!

    Have you considered a generator?

    or wireless sound system?

just something to think about ..

Our wedding is at a golf course on the actual course, but my DJ has done many weddings there and he said he's all set up , so in that sense I guess Im lucky good luck

Look into renting or asking friends for a portable generator. Some you can hook up at least 5 Heavy Duty extensions to. However the draw back is that they can be loud. so it might have to be turned of during the ceremony and or located a bit away or w/ barriers in front it to lessen sound. There are models that can last 5- 8 hours..

We've heard good things about wireless systems--we're looking at buying something for our outdoor ceremony like this: http://www.mcmelectronics.com/product/PYLE-PCMX240I-/555-9800

It has an iPod dock, which is essential for us.

Talk to your DJ. We've ran into this problem MANY times! We plug in close to the outlet, but run our speakers to the ceremony site. We have a mixer that plugs into the power outlet, then all of our speakers plug into the mixer. If your DJ has many 100 feet cords for the speakers (OR if they are wireless) you will have no problem with getting sound to your ceremony site. Also, ask the venue what has been done in the past.

Talk to your DJ first to see what he says. If he needs outlets ask him his power requirements in terms of amps. Then ask the ceremony location how many amps that breaker can handle that the outlet you have access to can handle. Then see if what the DJ needs is less then the outlet. Subtract roughly 1.5 amps for extension cords. Then invest in some heavy duty extension cords and surge protectors. Good ones for that length will run a couple hundred dollars btw. Then you should be set.

I'm a geek. My fiancee and I are running into the same problem. Im only running speaker wire and using my geek friends to run a remote system with a laptop and such though.

I will warn you generators are not quite, even the ones that claim they are 'quieter running'. Our ceremony is at my parents house, so we will have power, We might be renting a speaker/amp unit that will acomodate about 4 mics..But then again, My cousin had an outdoor wedding with mo speakers and the officiant was loud enought to hear, and although they were hard to hear, it worked out fine, our music is my cousins plaiyng guitar and violin. So we don't need power, all though you do, Have you asked your DJ if they have delt with a simular situation?

We are also having an outside wedding, but luckily we have power right there. We are having our DJ do the music.

Before that FH and I were just going to have his Bose system (which has a battery pack) and play cd's.

Another option would be to have someone play live music. Whether it be a guitar, strings or harp.

Speaking as a DJ, usually it's not a very good idea to run very long extension cords. Squawkbox has a good point, running the DJ system way in the back and and running speaker wires from the DJ booth/setup to the front of the reception makes the most sense.

100 feet is not TOO far. Most professional DJ's have speaker cables that go up to (and beyond) 100 feet. You will also be running at least one microphone cable as well (unless you use a wireless system). My preference for a ceremony is to use wired microphones.
