Ordering on Blue Nile or James Allen for wedding bands...feeling nervous about online purchase.PAGING MrsBdeG!

Bride2Be2018, on December 16, 2017 at 1:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

FH wants a Tantalum ring. I would really like to go to a physical store but every store I call says it's a newer metal used for men's rings so they aren't carrying it yet. Does anybody know any physical stores that sell this type of ring? These rings run in the $400 range so I feel weird about just ordering from a random online store. Or does anybody have a good experience with the above listed stores?

ETA: @ MrsBdeG decided to page you for your thoughts on this...since I recall you mentioning in another thread about being certified in this field. What are your thoughts on purchasing from online? Any suggestions on specific websites over others? Or if you know where to find these rings I would sooo appreciate it!

I haven't ordered our bands yet, but will likely get FH's from Blue Nile. I have ordered from them several times for myself and gifts and have been happy with every purchase. Their shipping is fast and free, and their customer service is phenomenal. Have you considered Brilliant Earth? We live in the Boston area and they have a store here, FH got my engagement ring there and was over the moon about their service. They helped him design it from start to finish and if there were any issues they fixed them without hesitation or question. The store is gorgeous, if they have one in your area it is worth a look!

@Stacey I just checked for Brilliant Earth and they don't have any in South Florida...dangit!! Nice to know that you had good luck with Blue Nile though.

My engagement ring is from James Allen. It was a great experience and my ring is stunning. I've only had it for about 4 months so I can't speak as to the longevity of it, but the craftsmanship seems sturdy and it's a lot prettier in person than it was online!

Not sure about Blue Nile. My FH purchased my engagement ring through Brilliant Earth, though, and had a good experience. He never saw it in person, either.

I'm so happy to hear people have had good experience with those online retailers. I think the style he wants is one from James Allen. Thanks for the confirmation guys!

My engagement ring came from Brillant Earth which I LOVED. FH had amazing service with them even with me having to get it resizes. I got both of our bands from Blue Nile and absolutely LOVED them. Amazing 1 day shipping and all my appraisal ppwk to insure it.

Blue nile is great. It's where my engagement ring is from. FH loved how he was able to make payments and chose a stone and setting

This is my engagement ring and matching custom order wedding ring, both from Blue Nile. I cannot speak highly enough of Blue Nile; their customer service was great for both purchases.

My engagement ring is from brilliant earth and I love it! I had to get it resized and it was very simple and easy to do. They said it would be 2-3 weeks and it was delivered at my home on the 2 week mark.

We have had a great experience with James Allen. Both my wedding set and DH's band are from James Allen and we love them. The diamonds seem like a better quality for the price over what you can get in the store especially for his band!

My engagement ring is from Ritani and my wedding band is from Blue Nile. So far I have been very happy with both! I need platinum rings due to metal allergies, and I've found the prices are much more competitive on these sites vs. other stores.

FH got my engagement ring from Blue Nile and I love it. I also ordered my wedding band online from Fascinating Diamonds and even though I'm not wearing it yet, it still is exactly what I wanted!

Hey! Sorry I was away from my computer! Last minute Christmas shopping all day.

That said. I hate shopping for fine jewelry online unless it is an AGS company. Unfortunately with their pricing games, poorly documented and independently verified sourcing lines, Blue Nile has not been accepted in the American Gemological Society. This shouldn't be a huge concern with something like a men's band because it appears as though that ring doesn't have any stones to worry about.

Blue Nile does play the "pricing game" where they mark things up to mark them down. Sales aren't always what they appear to be and may appraise for much lower (really bad for insurance purposes!). If you want to try to shop around find a "mom and pop" jeweler on the AGS website or find a local Helzberg Diamonds or Tiffany (only two large major jewelry retailers who are AGS certified). They tend to be able to order essentially whatever you'd want from their jewelry and findings company (typically Stuller). If you'd like to go with Blue Nile, that's totally fine as well just be away that you'll have to get it independently appraised for insurance purposes and it may appraise for less than you purchased it for.

In terms of the metal it's a nice alternative metal. I would not suggest it if he labors heavily or is any type of mechanical enthusiast (or does any type of welding). With alternative metals you run into the issue of safety if an emergency situation were to occur. Many "trauma shears" are designed to cut through basic metals (silver, gold, brass, etc.) but the much stronger metals like tungsten and tantalum are nearly "indestructible." This is a fun marketing tool but poor in terms of safety. If his hand or finger were to be injured or crushed he could lose a finger because the emergency medical staff could not cut off the ring ( the rings need to be shattered or crushed to be destroyed).

If this isn't of concern, go for it! It's a cool modern ring. It seems to be priced moderately, however, I always suggest shopping around and with a jeweler that has been accredited.
