Opinions on registering for china

Did you guys put fine china on your registry? I don't want to, but FH does. Thoughts? ETA- You guys have convinced me to register for china! But how many place settings do I need? I don't want to go over board, but I want enough to be able to use them if we plan to host a holiday or nice dinner....

My mom recommended that we have 8 place settings for casual dinnerware, 12 for fine china

I registered for the noritake platinum crestwood set with service for 8. My set comes with dinner plates, salad plates, bread/butter plates, soup bowls, cups and saucers, a serving platter and serving bowl. There are other items I can add (gravy boat, creamer, etc). Here's a link (Ali, it looks similar to yours): https://m.bedbathandbeyond.com/m/product/noritake-reg-crestwood-platinum-50-piece-dinnerware-set/1014062068;jsessionid=5GmBWs6WJpzghwyZlkyWzW5L86Qt2mk0TpMx7MgQyDvMq8pf2zSJ!-632153408

I already have everyday dishes that we love and aren't that old. I registered for nice white dishes at Crate & Barrel. I figured that way I can use them for casual or formal and dress the table for any occasion. White works with everything. I have my grandmother's china is storage boxes and have never used it. It all depends on your lifestyle.

We registered for fiestaware since we're not fine china people. I'd much rather get dishes that we will use every day than fancy stuff that sees the table once a year at best.

We registered for 16 place settings (dinner plate, salad plate, small bowl, cup & saucer) because we anticipated hosting the holiday dinners. We also got the matching platter, gravy boat, sugar & creamer, tea pot, butter dish, and large vegetable bowl.

I think it's always good to have for the holidays if you're hosting an event.

It's a waste of other peoples money and cupboard space unless you actually like and plan to use it often.

I didn't. We registered for a nice set of everyday dishes and got 8 settings--then I was paranoid about not being able to replace them and bought 8 more place settings. All the nice dishes are still at my parents' in storage because DH doesn't want to use them until we buy a house. I don't really understand the logic, but we're still using the mismatched plates that came from his parents' when DH moved into his first place, supplemented with random replacements from Target and Rite Aid.
