Opinions on registering for china

Becoming A Mrs!, on January 29, 2016 at 6:23 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

Did you guys put fine china on your registry? I don't want to, but FH does. Thoughts?

ETA- You guys have convinced me to register for china! But how many place settings do I need? I don't want to go over board, but I want enough to be able to use them if we plan to host a holiday or nice dinner. Also what additional items do we need? (gravy boat, serving platters, etc.)

Will you use it? And will you buy any of the missing pieces/settings? Do you have a place to store it? If yes, go for it. If no, don't bother.

We did not because we aren't really fine china people. We registered for fiestaware because we love the bright colors and we currently have mis-matched plates and serving pieces. Plus I would rather receive things we will use daily as opposed to expensive china we will only use once in awhile.

I would ask him what he wants it for. I suppose if one is EVER going to get fine china, a wedding is a good time to get it. To me it seems like a dust collector that belongs at my grandparents' house.

We registered for a set of China that can be dressed up for dinner parties, or used every day if we needed to.

We did! And the serveware, and fine crystal drinking glasses. We registered with long-term life in mind. I know we will one day be hosting family and holiday dinners. We also already own our home, so we did not register for regular plates, bowls or drinking glasses.

ETA: We made sure to register for a dishwasher safe set so we knew we'd use it!

Do you have a 'fine china' lifestyle? Do you see yourself using it? Realistically, would you invite 8 people over for a formal dinner OR would you use it yourself every day?

I have gorgeous, gorgeous flatware that cost a fortune and I love, and I DO use it every day, (along with the obscenely expensive crystal) but we rarely set a table and almost never have formal dinner parties. (no, make that never...)

You'll probably be about the same people after your wedding as you are before; some of us are five piece place setting people.....some of us are giant soup bowl and wine glass people, lol....

    Both are fine.

We aren't going to. I have my great-grandmother's china, so we don't really need it.

Our registry is pretty much all fine china and crystal. Why are you hesitant?

I wasn't going to, but ultimately did. Between FH and I, we have more than enough everyday dinnerware sets. Neither of us cares whether they match when it's just the two of us. So, I opted for a beautiful, formal set that we can use for company. It can still be put in the dishwasher or used casually if we wanted to.

ETA: like annakay, I know I'll want to host holidays in the future and I'd like to have a full set of china for that.

I just picked a really nice white stoneware dish set and got 12 plates, bowls, small plates. I like white because it's clean and crisp and can be used for every day or dressed up. It's not too expensive if it breaks it can be replaced

We registered for bone china, but it's for everyday use. We would never use fine china. Ours is dishwasher and microwave safe and virtually unbreakable.

This is mine! I know that even if I don't exactly lead a "fine china" lifestyle right this minute, I'll certainly want china for my family events and special occasions in the future and now's the time to get it! It's also dishwasher safe so FH and I can easily have a pizza and wine night with our china and crystal Smiley smile

We opted for nice stoneware--noritake brand. We will use it everyday but still think it's nice enough for guests. Everyone I know who registered for fine china only got mismatched pieces/odd numbers and then had to decide if they'd buy the rest.

We opted for a nicer set that we'll use for formal entertaining & holiday meals in the future, but isn't fine china per say. The set we selected is a fixture at Crate & Barrel and should be around for years if we need to replace anything or add to it eventually.

We did. My parents wedding china played a huge part in my childhood especially special occasions and I want to share the same tradition with my children. I think it's a beautiful way to establish household traditions.

I did! My mother will typically bring out her fine china for Christmas and other holidays. I plan on doing the same when FH and I host Christmas

ETA: Jeanne- I didn't read your comment before I posted. I want if for the exact same reason

Okay you guys have convinced me to register for china! I know its important to my FH so it doesn't hurt to just add it to our registry. Now the question is, how many place settings do I register for? Do I go for a complete set, like the bowl, multiple plate sizes, cups, gravy boat, etc? I never used china growing up so I don't really know what we will need..

I absolutely did. I loved having family dinners on holidays and special occasions on my mother's china. My sister inherited my great grandmother's and I am always envious when she pulls it out for showers and holidays. I am really hoping to have a set of my own so that I can create new memories with our families and our future children.

My mother registered for fine china, silverware, and crystal, and the only thing bought was 1 sterling fork. They used their cash/check gifts, to buy the rest. And regretted it. They rarely used the china.

We registered for china that was around $50 a place settting. We use it for daily use and then dress it up for holidays. For us, it was a happy medium; we really didn't have the storage for two sets. And when we entertain, it's usually for more than 12 people, and makes use of our back deck.

I registered for 10 5-piece settings (dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, cup and saucer ) plus 10 rimmed soup bowls (good for pasta or salad), a serving platter and a serving bowl. I'm also on the hunt for a covered vegetable dish and gravy boat that matches my pattern (I didn't realize that Lenox doesn't make those items in my pattern, which is weird).
