Opinions on Alterations Needed

Carly, on November 19, 2019 at 7:48 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
I had my first alterations appointment yesterday - so far, she’s going to sew in better cups and add a bustle. But, there’s a couple things she suggested I do - that I’m not sure if I want or not.

1. Taking in the shoulder seams— It felt okay without taking them in— It a little uncomfortable when she had the shoulder seams pinned — I’m worried about what it’ll look like to loose the lace appliqué along the shoulders— I wonder if shortening the shoulder seams will give my boobs more support?** I forgot to take pictures with the shoulder seams pinned
2. Adding 2 darts/seams under my breasts to tighten in the fabric at my waist— I don’t care for the look of adding (2) visible seams in the front of my dress— Adding the seams will make the lace appliqué not line up— Does it look weird to you?** pictures attached
Picture 1 - Without shoulder seams taken in & without darts/seams added to waist

First let me say your dress is beautiful! I would want to make sure that after the darts the pattern would still line up. If not I would probably go without them. I think once the shoulder seems are taken in you will have a better fit through the bust and if not have small cups sewn in to help.

I agree about the shoulders may be taken in a bit as it definitely can push up the cleavage a bit more. I don't know how the finished product will look but as of right now to meet the darts. do stand out a little bit and looks a little odd. Beautiful dress and I definitely think that a nice lace applique will hit your shoulders very nicely.

I’d ask her to try sew in the better cups first and see if that gives you the support you’re looking for. If not, then reconsider the darts. TBH, I don’t see much of a difference when looking head on, it’s more in the profile shot that I see a subtle different. I’m guessing you have a very low back or illusion back otherwise she’d take in on the sides to tighten? The open and illusion backs are so popular now but what we forget when we’re all pinned up in the salon buying these dresses is that style can limit the support the dress can offer. 😊

Yes, it’s an allusion back with 3 keyholes. So, unfortunately it can’t be taken it at the side seams.

First off, your dress looks absolutely beautiful on you! The shoulder seams would help support your cleavage yes, but would also keep your straps from slipping down. I don’t think they would, but she may be thinking of you dancing. Once again he farts are properly sewn in, you won’t see them at all... or at least you shouldn’t. Really the darts will help accentuate your waist. I’d recommend having them put in regardless of how much support you get with the better cups.

If you have more questions, feel free to DM me. I’ve sewn a lot, including 2 prom dresses.

The way the alterations lady explained the darts to me was that the appliqué lines would no longer connect if she applied the darts. If you look at the close up of it pinned, you can kind of see it. I’m not as worried about the seams the darts would create - as I am about loosing the appliqué lines. Does that make sense?

The darts do accentuate your waist looking at your profile, but I'm not sure how the material would line. Have you taken your dress to another seamstress just to get a second opinion on what alterations should be made?

The darts/seams are ehhhh unless it will match up and lay perfectly flat.

    Shoulders are a go though.

Yeah, that makes sense. I'd respectfully disagree with your alterations lady and as another person commented to get a second opinion. She ought to be able to either create the dart so as to match the applique up - it won't be 100%, but will be super close and you won't use the lines of the applique as much. Or she could create the dart in the base material and take in the applique to match the contour of the dart without losing the applique lines. It's also hard to tell exactly how the dress lays in the picture so these suggestions are based off of what I can see.

What about someone said earlier to do cups? I was thinking that or adding boning to the lining if the material could take it.

Yes, I already have her adding better cups - I go back next Wednesday to try it back on with only that alteration + a bustle. From there I have to decide about the shoulder seams and the darts. But, I will ask her about adding boning to the lining. Thanks for the help!

If she can’t do the darts without lining up the appliqué - I will at least take it to another place for and 2nd opinion. Thanks for the help!
