Only Inviting Children of Siblings? How to Phrase on Wedding Website?

LovroftheArts, on September 18, 2017 at 1:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

We've decided that, due to budgetary constraints, we will only be inviting the children of our siblings (between the 2 of us we have 9 siblings and currently 12 nieces and nephews all ranging in age between 1 - 19 years old). We are giving all guests a plus one (or inviting their spouse/significant other by name).

What is the most polite way to phrase this on our wedding website? We do have several guests that have infants or toddlers and our venue does not charge for ages 4 and under so I did plan to put a line in stating, "Exceptions will be made for nursing parents with infants or toddlers."

You address the invite to only who is invited.

Don't put anything about who isn't invited anywhere. Address the invites to the people who are invited and if they RSVP for additional children call them and tell them you're sorry but you can only accommodate invited guests.

I wouldn't put anything on the website at all. You address your invites only to those are invited. Also toddlers is a really vague line to draw.

    Example:

    The Smith Family

Mrs. Sue and Mr. Bob Smith

Hahnsolo, how do you reconcile giving plus ones, without restricting the use to adults?

I literally addressed specifics in the family but we also stated no children for the ceremony but that they were welcome to bring them for reception and we actually had a lot of guests if not all state how happy they were that we said no children

How do you say no children for the ceremony but not the reception? What the heck are people supposed to do with them for half an hour?

    Great points @Felicia @catlady5x @Sarah & @Mrs. Fall Bride

Definitely want to *avoid creating any problems or confusion so we shall do as you all have suggested and address invites only to invitees and add in the line about the # of seats reserved.

Thank you all so much! One less thing to stress about.

    Edited for *avoid

There is no need to address this anywhere. It is perfectly reasonable to invite only nieces and nephews. No one should have a problem with this. As pp's said, address the invites to the adults only. I would not open the door to any exceptions either.

...you're welcome? Why only acknowledge four people out of the 10 who commented?

@RealLindseyO -I was just speaking to specific points made by each of those posts but I do appreciate everyone's comments why is why I included the line at the end stating "Thank you all so much!"

Not at all, it just seems odd to pick and choose who you thank.

I don't think most parents will be miffed. Quite a few of the parents I've talked details to (family members) they assumed their kids weren't going. I personally won't care either way, but I feel like it's kind of an assumed thing since it's a very adult party

Address to whomever is invited. I wish we would have done the same thing. A large family told us that none of their kids were coming suddenly sprung it on us that all 6 are coming.

Parents have no right to be "miffed" if their kids aren't invited. Couples have every right to invite ONLY the children they want there. Nieces and nephews only is a clear line and makes perfect sense. But even if the bride and groom wanted a few other kids there because they're close to those kids, that is fine too. Kids are not all or nothing and couples don't have to invite your kids if they don't want to. I will never understand why some parents feel entitled to bring their kids to a wedding.

I will be inviting my niece and nephews, but only because my sisters are in the bridal party. Plus I spend a ton of time with the kids and they would be heartbroken if I left them out. They ask me about it every time I see them, I'd feel awful telling them they couldn't come. I am allowing them to each bring a babysitter. I would have hired one but my nephews are young and wouldn't do well with a stranger. I don't plan on addressing this unless someone brings it up. I will never understand why people get upset that their kids aren't invited. I work with children and I can tell you that most people are happy to have a date night without the kids. I personally would LOVE a wedding without kids, I love my nephews but I haven't had an uninterrupted conversation with either of my sisters in at least 10 years.
