"Older" Brides

aspiecat, on July 9, 2013 at 6:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

I am an "older" bride. I guess I am, anyway! I will be 45 by the time I marry in a few months, and although I have no issues with my age, I wonder if I will have people tell me - namely bridal consultants - that I need to keep away from a particular style or what have you, due to being 'of a certain age'.

Any other brides who are probably considered "older" here in WW? How have your journeys been in your planning?

My consultant was wonderful. She let me pick out anything that I thought I'd liked (more like my 17 yr old daughter) picked what she thought I'd like, as she knows her momma really well (as far as fashion goes). Most consultant don't think of age, they look at your shape & size. Good Luck!!

I'm older and haven't encountered any comments like that. Although, I haven't gone dress shopping either.

If anyone is stupid enough to say something like that to me they will wish they hadn't I have a tendency to let's say "express" myself.

I wouldn't worry about it...have fun and find what you want and what looks good on you. You know what's best for you.

I will be 48 when we say I do and this is my first marriage. Many people think I have married before because I have a teenage daughter. If a consultant said something like that to me - I would turn around and leave their store.

Thankfully I had a fabulous consultant who listened to what I wanted and not what they thought was best.

I would listen to their suggestions but if you want to wear a cupcake gown or a mermaid gown - age be darned and rock it!

I am 48. Aside from the one venue I visited (but did not use) where the receptionist asked me where the bride was, assuming I was the MOB, I had no issues. Don't worry what anyone says. Others will have comments about your wedding, no matter your age. Try on dresses and find one you feel fabulous in - by this stage, you know what looks good on you and what your tastes are...I actually found it to be a plus.

I just turned 40 if a consultant made any reference to my age I would simply make reference to her commission and leave

I will be 47 when we marry and he will be 43... a first marriage for both of us.

Not one person has made suggestions (well... except my mom:] ) that things should be age appropriate.

That being said... glad I waited till this age since I am more "classic" in my choices.

Enjoy your planning and have fun!

I'm an older bride. I'm 50 years old and believe it or not I didn't get one comment from vendors or consultants etc. The opposite actually. The couple of comments I did get were more in reference to this being my 2nd marriage and the color and type of gown I wear. Don't let someone else try to define what your wedding experience should be. If it's what you want and it feels right, enjoy.

I almost feel like an older bride at the age of 38, especially when reading posts on here from much younger girls. Smiley smile But, no one even believes I'm in my 30's so it's all good.

I got married on my 56th birthday. I had a couple of people ask whether I was the mother of the bride. (It probably didn't help in that regard that NotFroofy is 15 years younger than me.) But once I straightened out the misunderstandings, no one had the nerve to tell me what I should or shouldn't do based on my age.

I'm almost 36. Does that make me "older." I wish I would have had the good sense to wait this long to marry the first time. I guess I don't know if people consider me an older bride or not because I'm 100% comfortable with where I am.

FH turns 43 the day after we get married.

I am 45 and not once did anyone try to "restrict" me in my planning. However, that may be because most people think I am in my late 20s/early 30s. YAY for fabulous family genes. LOL! Even if they did say something I would give them the eyeball. Really.

I'm slightly older than you and we had no issues with anyone in regards to our age. In fact my amazing bridal consultant was the person who encouraged me to try on those dresses I liked, and not get stuck thinking I was limited because of age to choosing only from certain styles. If it weren't for his encouragement I most certainly never would have tried on the mermaid dress that I felt so beautiful in. Ditto with our venue consultants, florist and photographer. We planned our wedding to match our quirkiness and playfulness and our consultants were right there with us which made the whole year-long planning experience so much fun and culminated in the wedding of our dreams.

I may be pushing 50 but I ain't walking around with a countdown clock. Having too much fun living life in all it's fullness surrounded by those people and things that lift me up. I have no time for Debby Downers. At the end I have every intention of sliding in with a huge smile on my face and a loud Wahoo!

I am 52 and FH is 42. I picked out a dress with just my bridesmaid with me due to others out of state. My consultant told us how fun we were and laughed when I told her that at my age I didn't want to be a Disney princess. I think that how you approach it will set the pace for others. I am older and plus size so I was a bit leary of the experience but had a blast both times and have a beautiful dress waiting on me.

I will be 39 when we have this. But we are already married and it will be 9 years for our vow renewal. We were married out of the country and said when we came back we would have a reception but life got busy, very busy and now is the best time for us to have one. I can't imagine any steering you in one direction except for the one YOU want. Good luck in planning Smiley smile

Well I'm 47 and my consultant never said anything about a particular style to me because of my age. I took my grown daughter and my mom with me. My daughter kept bringing me dresses that I thought were for younger women, lol, but I just got what looked best on my body type. Have fun and enjoy the process.

I am 50 and this was my third wedding. No one said a word to me about my dress or anything else. If they had, they would have heard what I had to say. I did find out that a so called friend made a snide remark or two about the fact that it was my third wedding and said I should have just gone to Vegas...(and this is after her b.s. for not being invited in the first place). Anyway, I wore a short and simple dress for my own personal reasons, but I think if you want a long frilly dress (or whatever you like) you should go for it. It is your day. And if it is your first marriage at 45, 39, 26 or 18 or even your third marriage at 50, no one has the right to judge. No one knows your story like you do.

Have fun and do not listen to Negative Nellies. Be happy and embrace the new life you are going to have with FH.

My mom just turned 53 and got re-married a couple of weeks ago. She rocked a goooorrgeous strapless lace mermaid gown. It was this lovely ivory color and I could NEVER hope to pull all that off (and I'm 26...). Have no worries, my dear. If you're in the right place they'll dress you for your shape and style.
