October 2021 Wedding & covid Worries

Amanda, on October 22, 2020 at 11:31 AM Posted in Planning 1 11
Hi. We are getting married October 16, 2021. We got engaged at the end of January and booked our venue and a few vendors right before COVID shut everything down. Originally I wasn’t worried about things and continued planning as it sounded like things would be better by summer or fall at the latest. Now we’re a year away and things look like we’re about to hit a second wave of the pandemic. I’m worrying because we were planning on sending our Save the Dates out after the holidays and we have roughly 180 on our guest list. Right now in NYS, weddings are only allowed to have 50 people. If things continue and we still don’t have a vaccine or can’t have more than 50 people this time next year, I would be wasting money sending save the dates to our entire guest list if they’re in reality not able to come. How are you handling this? Should I still send the Save the Dates to everyone in hopes things will be better? Should we cut the list a bit in case we’re not able to have everyone but still able to have maybe 100 if things get better by this time next year? I’m just kind of at a crossroads and my fiancé thinks we should wait and see but it’s weighing on me more and more.

I would probably wait until six months out before sending the Save the Dates. Six months is closer to the normal timing, plus it will give you a much better sense of restrictions. I know it's an exciting step to get them out there, and normally there isn't much harm in sending them early other than people forgetting about it. But, even just 2-3 more months might buy you the time you need to make a better informed decision.

Normally I would do that but we have a decent amount of family coming from out of town and was told to bump up the save the date timeframe because of that. Also have a lot of people in healthcare/first responders that need to give ample time off for work. I dunno maybe 10 months is too early.

I would operate with the mindset that everything is going to be OK by your wedding date and go ahead and send save the dates to everyone. Do you have a wedding website? If so, you could include the website address on the STDs and put a little something on the site about while you hope things go as currently planned, if restrictions due to the pandemic have not been lifted by Fall of next year, you will unfortunately be forced to cut the guest list.

Date twin! So I agree with PP. We're going into planning thinking everything will be good by our wedding. I would make sure to include a wedding website so that guests can check back if there are any updates.

Hey date twin! My fiancé was against a wedding website but I think given the situation it may be a requirement now. I really reallllllyyyy want to have hope we will be able to have the day we’re dreaming of and planning for but if not, I’m okay with changing and I think the wedding website will help. Thank you for the suggestion!

My wedding is September 19,2021 and I was advised to plan as if things would be normal. SOOOOO much easier to say than do haha. Trying to stay positive and do just that. When booking, we have been making sure to speak to vendors about rescheduling plans just in case 🤞🏼

I’m facing a similar struggle. I’m hesitant in planning and booking certain things since the future of this whole thing is so unknown. Right now I plan on sending mine out normally, but I also plan on reaching out privately if things are still restricted. My wedding is in Massachusetts, so I understand

We are wedding day TWINS! Smiley heart

I had a hard time with this as well (I'm originally from NY but currently live in AZ) and we made the decision to get married out here in AZ (sort of like a destination wedding) and in AZ they're a little more lenient in gatherings. My best advice is to wait until the very last minute that you can for your save the dates (I think some say you can send them out 6-8 months from the wedding date) that way you can keep on eye on the regulations with this pandemic and from there if they don't let up past 50 people you won't have to worry about spending the money on the mailings and then having to tell people they can't come. I would also have my backup guest list (for a smaller wedding) ready to go so that you don't stress about who to cut out of the list later down the road. I hope that the restrictions for gatherings loosen up come next fall for you!!! Best of luck!

    Sending all my love!!

Thank you wedding day twin! I am going to go with a suggestion a few ladies above mentioned which is to do a wedding website. We weren’t planning on it and my fiancé didn’t want it but after talking to him about it today he totally agreed it’s the right thing to do. So I think the wedding website combined with maybe sending them out at like 8 months opposed to 10, might work in our favor. We do also have a small list to use in the worst case scenario, I hope it doesn’t come to that! Fingers crossed! ❤️
