Obtain a marriage license in one state and get married in another

Sonia, on August 5, 2016 at 12:44 PM Posted in Planning 1 10

My fiance and I live in the State of Georgia. Being both of our entire family lives in the State of Massachusetts we plan to wed there. The law state that you have to obtain a marriage license in the state that you reside and at the same time a wedding officiant told me that I cannot legally be married in Massachusetts with a license from another state. This is the first wedding for the both of us so I am not sure what to do! Our wedding is July 2017..... Any advise or help would be much appreciated!

You have to get the license in the state you will be married in. Otherwise, your officiant cannot legally perform the ceremony.

That doesn't make any sense at all. You can't take a license from any state to another state and expect it to be valid.

I suggest contacting the county clerk for whatever county you plan to be wed in, via phone, and ask them outright the procedure for obtaining a marriage license if you live out of state.

You will need a marriage license from the county where you are getting married. Find the website online and read up on the specific requirements- every county is different.

Also, a quick Google search led to several government websites that all said the same thing as this one:

    http://m.cityofboston.gov/registry/marriage/

You go in, apply with required documents, wait 3 days, pick up your license, and get married. You can also apply by mail in case you're from out of state.

I think you got bad information

We are getting married in a different state as well and all we need is a marriage license from that county. I would check with the state you are getting married in first!

I officiate a lot of destination weddings and am no longer surprised when an out-of-state couple asks if they can bring a license from their home state. NO!

Ahh that would be nice. Our wedding is out of state and I'm trying to figure out when to get our wedding license amidst the two (maybe only one?) trip we'll be up there beforehand.
