ny Bride canceled venue

Samantha, on July 15, 2020 at 10:27 AM Posted in New York Planning 0 17
So after waiting it out as long as possible, and after speaking to the venue, we decided to cancel the venue and hold an ceremony/celebration with immediate family with a max of 50, in my FH's parents backyard. Our wedding is Aug 30th. We spoke to our venue who is refusing to offer a refund, and is claiming they will be able to have our wedding of 160 people. According to literally every piece of information put out by the gov, wedding venues can operate with a max of 50 people in phase 4. Our venue is trying to claim itself as a restaurant now, however, according to the guidelines, this means no dancing, no standing, no nothing. I refuse to pay >$20,000 for a dinner. Its not what we signed up for and it wasnt a "restaurant" when we signed the contract. So frustrated with how they're handling things. But at least now we can move forward, send our invites out, hire a planner, and get the ball rolling again. Hope everything turns out okay for all you other brides dealing with this situation...smh..heartbreaking..

Same date, also in NY, and same problem. They’re refusing to provide us with any info on what this event would look like. Wedding is 5 weeks out, how are we supposed to go through with that? They also put a freeze on postponing into 2021. But youre absolutely right, its not what we signed up for and not fair. I hope you end up getting your money back and honestly you will probably have a better day than if you had to deal with all that at the venue!

I hope we get our money back too...this whole thing has been a nightmare. I def think it will be better than at the venue. We found a really great couple recently for wedding planning so hopefully everything goes smoothly🤞. I dont get how they can put a freeze on postponing when its so close to the day!! Unbelievable.... praying for you.

I am in the exact same boat. I am supposed to get married on 8/29/20. My venue in Port Jefferson is claiming that because they have a restaurant on the premises they can operate my wedding as if they are a restaurant at 50% capacity which is 200 people. My reading of the New York State Liquor Authority's guidelines for Establishments with On-Premises Liquor Licenses is that they are limited to the lesser of 50 people or 50% capacity. Because my venue refuses to refund my money (just under $20,000) I reached out to the governor's office. I received an email back saying that weddings are nonessential social gatherings and are limited to a maximum of 50 people. I'm am still fighting with the venue. They even had the audacity to demand my June payment on July 20, 2020, which would have been another $8,000. I sent them a letter advising them of the guidance that I received from NYS and have not heard back from them since. I refuse to give in because they are attempting to do something that is illegal.

Yeah. My venue tried the same thing with that restaurant crap but eventually called me 2-3 weeks later saying they will refund me the money, but they dont know when. I did send them a threatening letter though via mail requesting once again a refund before they called me. Except now I have to send another letter explaining that according to the contract, refunds are to be given within 30 days, smh....such a hassle trying to get ur money back from buisinesses trying to scam their way around the guidelines. And u are absolutely right, its 50% or 50 people, whichever is the lesser. I cnt wait for this to be over honestly. This has been the most stressful time in my life, horrible...

I’m hoping that my venue will come to the same decision. It’s a shame that we have to go through this and what is supposed to be the happiest time in your life is causing so many people so much stress. Best wishes Samantha and everyone on here who is going through these tough times! Hopefully in the end this makes our marriages that much stronger because of what we had to go through

Breached how?! Theyre the ones who cant hold the wedding you signed for? I'd be speaking to a lawyer and filing a lawsuit now...no point in waiting, theyre obviously not going to budge.

They’re saying we breached because we didn’t pay them the June payment when they asked for it on July 18 even though the regulations haven’t changed and they still can’t hold our wedding of 150. I think the stronger position for a lawsuit may be to wait until after August 29 when the regulations haven’t changed and they would not be able to perform the contract anyway due to those government regulations. But we’re definitely considering it

No 50 people would be less than 17,500. But they never offered to hold our wedding with 50 people. The lowest they went was 86 or 87 which still isn’t permitted
