NWR/interracial marriages....a chat of sorts...

I know it's a crazy show and a mess, but I'm just randomly started watching 90 day fiancé. I'm on the episode about the particular marriage (the boy was Caucasian and from I think the south and the girl was black...from South Africa). Watching this brought up all the fears I had about meeting FH's family. I'm black and he's Caucasian...German descent. I was terrified! I don't come from wealthy or prominent stock. It is what it is. We have very different upbringings. My FH hadn't brought anyone home in nearly 7 years. He's a very private person. And he's never dated anyone outside of his race before. Yeah, I was scared! He and I made all sorts of crazy/inappropriate jokes about race (that's how we role)...how his Oma was going through the early stages of Alzheimer's and lol was worried she'd think I was "the help". We're jokers, but I was worried. And he was worried that a few of his wealthier/sometimes snooty relatives would act unkind to me.

Well, I met them all...

I'm so happy you had a great experience. My FH and I are both Hispanic however, he looks has the looks and the fair complexion and I just look black. When we are together people stare and it first it made me uncomfortable but I stopped caring.

I'm Indian and my H is white. We've experienced some unwelcome looks and treatment when we're both in places like Jackson Heights (Lil India in Queens, NY) but most other places, we've been treated well. Some of the stores in JH even tried to charge us extra compared to when I visited alone. There's always haggling when shopping there so seeing how they would charge us extra plus the downright shitty looks they gave him made H and I stop visiting that neighborhood.

@Mrsw and @ Nas this is after you guys have been together for a while. You see each other as partners. This is like second date in I'm getting this speech. And if it wasn't that speech it was the I have never been with a black girl before speech.

There haven't been any issues with the families on either side, thankfully.

People on the outside though, that's a different story. We once went on this nice dinner date and about halfway through, this white couple came in and was seated at the table right next to us. All throughout dinner the woman kept giving us a side-eye and really disapproving looks. At the time, I didn't understand what her issue was because like @Nas said, I forget that my FH and I are different races and plus, we weren't being disruptive or anything. FH had to explain it to me..

I'm black he's Mexican and we haven't had any issues with our families accepting our relationship. We definitely do get the stares in public , I guess primarily because you don't see a whole lot of Mexican men with black women. You would think it wouldn't be an issue but it can still make some people feel some type of way.

The older folks in FH's family have been low-key unexcited. But his cousins and siblings have been great! My dad was disappointed I didn't marry someone from my culture (and I think secretly my mom too). But at the end of the day we love each other and we'll make it work. He's white and I'm black and we live in the South. The only time I really felt uncomfortable in public with him was when we went to Columbia, SC to visit his brother. People would stare or give dirty looks. A waitress even messed with our drinks (put coffee grinds in our Coke).

I'm Black and FH is Caucasian. My family absolutely loves him and his family feels the same way about me. We brought both families together in April of 2016 and everyone had an awesome time.

Our families have been pretty awesome, they have accepted our relationship. I am hispanic and he is caucasian, however we have gotten from "acquaintances" the implying question if I am marrying to get the citizenship. Which obviously is not the case, I am a US citizen already! Other than that we haven't had any issues. But some hispanic friends of mine haven't had that much luck, one of them wasn't even allowed into her bf house if his grandmother was there!

    @Keisha,

Let's just say that I had some interestingly strange online interactions with some of the guys...white guys online. There were more than a few who would start the conversation off with "I've never been with a black chick before". Very special...like ok, then lol

I'm pleased to hear that most of y'all are having positive experiences with most of your family members. The public folks can be total asshats at times...

    Oh!

It just occurred to me that I was at a fair with FH last year and amongst all the random trinket stalls, there was this one (Republican) candidate who had a booth and was running for some state seat. Anyways, he approached us to give us the schpeel and somehow, due to the press of the crowd, we couldn't quite make a getaway right away. Two minutes in, I told him I wasn't a citizen so I couldn't vote (in hopes that he would leave us alone).

He turned to FH and said, "Well, maybe she can marry you and get a greencard."

It made me so mad. (I'm Asian Canadian). I remember snapping "IF TRUMP WINS MAYBE HE (FH) CAN MARRY ME TO MOVE TO CANADA."

We still live in the States lol, but any time now.

I'm in a interracial relationship. FH is Hispanic. Most of his family members don't speak any English. His cousins love me. I hang out with them without him. I have a son from a previous relationship and they adore him! Honestly no complaints. They want me to learn Spanish so we can communicate. I'm learning. To me, dating out of my race isn't anything new for me. I've only dated 1 black man the rest have been Hispanic. I'm the first black girl he's dated. Just like you OP, we joke too. People stares constantly especially like the older Hispanics, Hispanic women, & black men. Shit, I don't care.

This pic is us recently at Legoland for my sons 3rd Birthday

For frame of reference, FH is African American and Irish, I'm Caucasian.

I've always been welcomed by FH's family and extended family. We don't talk to them all that often (they live six hours away), but when we head up for holidays its like we didn't spend any time away from them, we just pick right back up where we left off!

....my parents, on the other hand, were a pain in the butt! FH and I have dated off and on since 7th grade (we're both 30 now), and the 'off' times were because my parents basically put me under house arrest so I couldn't see him (kind of a big deal when you're 15).

We reconnected while in college, and as they couldn't stop me (seeing as how I had a job and paid my own bills), my parents invited us out to dinner ---- and it was like the planets aligned! No clue what fixed their malfunction, but after dinner we all went back to their house and sat around and talked for HOURS. They can't get enough of FH now, love him to death (to the point that at first he kept waiting to see what kind of trick this was).

It sucks that these are the kinds of things we're -still- dealing with in 2017, but I'm grateful that my parents came around -- I'm also still confused as to how our views on race can differ so greatly, yet they raised me??

Very happy to hear his family was warm towards you upon that first meeting!
