NWR: Why do cats do this?

Lacy, on October 26, 2010 at 12:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

We found one of the rescued kittens a home, and decided to keep the other 2 (Garfield and Grant). I'm sitting here watching Grant (the gray/white one) sleep. He is hugged up against the wall Every time he lays down, he walks in front of the wall and lays pressed against it and now he has turned over with his stomach pressed against it asleep. I've noticed all of our cats do this, but none as much as Grant. Does anyone know why cats do that, press themselves against a wall or some other object when they lie down to sleep?

Probably something about the texture. I've noticed my cat loves to rub herself against any abrasive surface. I think she's using it as a way to scratch herself.

I have one cat who forgets to put her tongue back in sometimes, so funny. And she is black so her lil pink tongue stands out.

Cats will be cats. My cat doesn't lay up against the wall, but I did notice lately she likes to lay up against the side of the computer desk, and peek at me if I'm sitting there. And sometimes she goes on her back, and lays there watching us. It's pretty funny.

@Jass, that's what Grant does, except against the wall lol. And Garfield like to lay half in one of my desk's shelves and half out on the floor.

All three of our cats are currently sleeping on the back of the couch, nothing to lean up against. They do like to get into boxes, though, the smaller the better.

DS suggests that it could be that the wall is warm, or cool, and the cat is using it to regulate body temp. I could see that.

I just evicted my kitty from the space between the small of my back and the back of my chair. I'm guessing it was warm there.
