NWR- Stye!?!?

Deleted, on October 31, 2012 at 10:46 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I am so upset right now.

Yesterday, my eye was feeling sore and this morning, I woke up with a full blown stye! Well.. I assume that's what it is anyway. It doesn't have any red bump or pimple looking thing on it, but it hurts REALLY bad... It hurts to touch it mostly on one spot on my upper eyelid, it hurts to move my eyeball, it hurts to blink... My eye itself doesn't feel irritated, just the lid, and it is really puffy and a little red.

The worst part is... I have a Halloween party to go to on Saturday and my costume involves a lot of face/eye makeup!!

I have no idea why I got it... All of my makeup I've been using is less than a month old.. The only thing I can think of is on Sunday I was practicing my Halloween makeup and I used baby oil to take it off my eyes which I've never used before. I scrubbed my face really well right after because I hate the oily feeling but maybe it wasn't good enough.

Anyone have any tips on how to get it to go away FAST?

Warm compress, but you'll probably need an antibiotic eye drop from the doctor. Don't use baby oil for taking off make-up, use mineral oil. I use it all the time to take off eye make up.

For the compress, put a hot face cloth in a baggie so you don't soak you face. Then you can remove from the baggie and microwave for like 30 secs and use again. Don't make it too hot, you'll burn your eye.

Good luck, best bet is the doctor.:-(

I'm gonna second the warm/hot compress. I used to get them all the time, and just that took care of them. And wash your eyelids with baby shampoo -- supposedly I got them because the eyelash follicles got clogged.

That said, what you've described sounds a bit bigger/more advanced than the styes I used to get. Start with the hot compress, though.

Thanks Mrs.V! I bought this "bed buddy" warm compress thing since I'm at work and don't really have time to keep wedding a washcloth, but this thing you just pop it in the microwave and it creates moist heat just like a compress so I've been using that. And it stays warm longer.

I'm hoping to avoid the doctor as I don't currently have insurance yet (ugh) but I will go if I have to.

I will definitely go get some mineral oil or just regular makeup remover too! I was all out, and thought "I've heard people use baby oil for makeup remover and I have some, and it's going to take too long to get all this makeup off with just soap and water...." Guess I learned my lesson there!

Do styes not usually hurt this bad?

I mean, it's not excrutiating but definitely enough that causes a lot of discomfort and makes me want to avoid moving my eye at all. I've never had anything like this though and a stye was the only thing that kind of sounded like it.

Reenski, same issue here. I had to wash with baby shampoo. I think mine was from the eyelash curler breaking the hair or ripping it out causing the follicle to get blocked. I used to get it in the same spot. Once it was actually an ingrown eyelash, man that sucked. But yea I never had a lot of swelling either, just that ore bump. :-(

Kristen, I was shocked how awesome mineral oil works. I was sick of paying 30 for top of the line remover, so I tried the mineral oil and it works awesome.

Hope it goes away for you by Saturday .They take a few days but shouldn't be as noticeable by then.

Yea, you probably have it on the inside of the lid. So its rubbing on your eye. You can also try rinsing the eye with water, but warm compress is about all you can do till it drains itself. :-(

I mean, now really thinking about it, when I first started getting them, they were uncomfortable. And if it's your first one, I could understand it causing that much discomfort -- but I don't think they were ever painful as much as they were annoying and you could feel it every time you moved your eye, ya know?

Now I can feel if they start and I'm immediately with the washing of the eyelids and hot compress -- beat it before it gets out of hand. But I only went to the doctor once, they gave me some eyelid cream that I still have (should probably throw it out) that I don't think did that much.

I think at the store they have a medicine called Stye that might help? Let me Google real quick...

Oh, man, inside? I didn't know that could happen, I think mine were always outside -- that said, I always try to beat them, so...

Edie, here's what you can look for at the store:

Probably the Halloween make-up was the problem. Especially if it was left over from last year.

Nancy- it wasn't actual like Halloween facepaint, I used only brand new MAC and NYX eyeshadows on my eyes, and the only part on my face that I used paint (which was also new) was on my cheek bone area. So it definitely wasn't that I don't think.

Reenski- I actually saw that at the store but the directions said to put the ointment UNDER my eyelid and on my eyeball and the idea of that totally creeped me out, hahah. I bought "Stye Eye Relief" eye drops that claimed to do the same thing, I haven't noticed any difference in the symptoms yet though :-/

Moist warm/hot compress. The moist part is to loosen the stuff that is in the stye and get it out of there. It is like a clogged pore on the lash line. Do it as often as you can. You can also put some neosporin type med on your upper lash/lid area when your eye is closed. it will go away.

Just get some stye goop over the counter, warm compress and I think you will be fine by saturday! Mine usually go away in a couple of days, no big deal. I've never had to go to the doctor for one. If it's still there this weekend or new symptoms develope maybe then go see a doctor. Like a fever, loss of sight, major swelling or spreading redness, streaking, that kind of thing. I use to get them a lot when I was little and wore more makeup. Thats sounds weird, lol but I use to wear makeup for competitions and didnt usually wash it off properly.
