NWR: I smell gas in my garage

Mrs Lilow, on February 17, 2011 at 8:56 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

So I just went into my garage for the first time in 1-2 days and it smells pretty strongly of gas. This is where my furnace is. We rent, so I contacted my landlord to see what she wanted us to do (don't want to be stuck with an after hours service charge if we just go ahead and call someone and she'd rather us not do that). It's snowing and will be realllyyyy cold tonight, we turned off the gas...but neither me or FH really know anything about this stuff..any words of advice? I know gas leaks can be serious business but my google search hasn't been very helpful so far.

If you're water heater has a pilot light get the HELL-o out of there and call the fire department!

Otherwise my advice would be open the garage door and air it out. if you have a fan, point it out the door and ventilate as much as possible.

I would be on the safe side and call the fire department, gas leaks are nothing to mess around with.

Agreed, I'd call the fire department, you don't want to deal with a gas leak and be in the house at the same time.

Does it smell like car gas or natural gas?

If it smells like natural gas GET OUT of YOUR HOUSE!!! If you have a natural gas leak it could be very dangerous. Call someone regardless of the after hours service charge (but get out of the house first) This is considered an emergency!

I think you can call your gas company and they should have someone come out immediately.

Go to a hotel if you need to!!

Call the Fire Dept and Gas provider ASAP, and get the hella outta there!

It's worth any call out fee/after hours charge. It's your lives after all.

Thanks ladies. Me, FH and our fur babies are at a hotel for the night. I guess when the propane tank gets low it emits fumes...we've been running the heat a lot in this weather, so I think we just ran out faster than usual. Everything's been shut off and we have someone coming out first thing tomorrow.

You can call the gas company and they will come out, usually free of charge. I smelled natural gas by our fireplace a couple months after we moved into our house. Called the gas company and they sent someone right out. No charge.

Call the gas company, better than having the place explode, bypass the Landlord if (s)he had not taken action.
