NWR: Adult birthday party

JaimeLeigh, on December 5, 2016 at 10:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 43

Let me start by saying that I don't expect gifts for my birthday as an adult, except from H Smiley winking

We were invited to a self hosted, 29th birthday at the couples home this weekend. It was a FB invite, very casual... Singlet and thongs kind of event.

Yesterday, I get a post notification from the birthday boys fiance saying: "Can you please bring cash as gifts, to help us finish our car modifications. Please dont bring alcohol as gifts as it will not get used. Thanks".

Ummm... WHAT?! Firstly, you're an adult. Do not expect gifts from anyone. Secondly, do not TELL me what I can bring, if I happen to choose to bring a gift!

Today, I get another post notification in the event.... "Remember guys, it's BYO alcohol and please bring money for pizza!"

What would you do? Would you bring "cash" as they so bluntly put it? I was going to get a nice bottle of wine and a card, now I'm considering skipping the gift all together!

They'd get a pepper shaker with no price tag on it.

I think I would pass and take birthday boy out for a drink on some other day. That isn't really a party, it's a "I'm going to tell you what to eat even though you are paying" thing. Pass.

We'd literally be paying them to attend his birthday party. I just can't...

I like the homemade card idea hahaha

The only reason we're going is because a few really good friends will be there that we don't get to see often. Otherwise I would be SO out!

I wouldn't go. If it was the matter of Bring Your Own anything, I can bring my own pizza and beer from the local grocery store and have a party with my couch and dog.

FH's best friend from high school invited him to a birthday party for himself. (He was turning 23) and he was all excited to go but the friend's girlfriend and mom both serperatlely fb messaged FH and their other mutual friend and told them only bring cash gifts. Neither of them showed up. He didn't think his friend knew they were messaging on his behalf and he didn't want to be the one to tell him so he just took him out at a later date.

Whaaaaat. Today is my birthday and my gift was a flower that FH picked when he was walking the dog. And it was great! Yikes. Don't enable that!

I personally wouldn't give them cash. I wouldn't be upset about bringing drinks and helping pay for the pizza though. We usually contribute food and drinks to the partys we go to anyways.

Car modifications? So that's not even a repair to drive it but to fancy it up? With what--racing strips and a spoiler?

Egads. Don't go. But I read that you might be going so I'd bring a money holder card with no money inside.

"Whoopsie! Did I forget that? Silly me." Shrug

Why would you go?? Just contact your friends that you don't see often and hang out separately.
