Nurse for a day?? Wheelchair bound gramps needs help to the wedding

Private User, on June 24, 2014 at 2:09 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hi! So my grandfather had a massive stroke last year and actually missed 2 family weddings so hes sure not going to miss ours. Thing is, my grandmother is almost 80 and she can't get him in to the car or get him out and what not so shes starting to hope he decides not to come...

Does anyone know if I can hire a day nurse to do all of this? Get him in the car and out and get him ready so my grandmother doesn't have to?

I'm also looking to find out if we can get him transportation to the hotel. I already have a van for him from the hotel to the venue but if I can find someone to drive them to Peabody I just know it would take so much stress off!

My aunt lives in CT so she won't be up in MA soon enough and my father.. well he has things to do that day

Any help is appreciated!!

Yes you can hire someone for that. Honestly sounds like ask you'd need would be a nurse aide. Contact a localnursing staffing agency and go from there. Also if he lives at a nursing home or assisted living then you can ask their social worker about local resources. We have private pay agency's like Senior Helpers and Always Best Care in my area that could also help facilitate this.

There should be a home health agency in your area that can provide an aide to help get him ready that day. You could also use a non-emergency medical transport to take him and your grandmother to and from the wedding. They are basically medi-taxis that transport wheelchair bound people to and from where they need to go.

Edit: What city do you need the aide and transport in?

Try to get references from your local senior center. Most areas have respite services. Actually, it might be something to look into anyway so grandma can get a break once in a while.

Find a Home Instead Senior Care in your area. You will get a personal caregiver who can take him to/from the wedding & help him while there with anything he needs.

You can absolutely do this. You can call a senior center or any place that has assisted living and hire someone. We even have an agency called Wings of Angels or something like that and that is all they do - transport the elderly or disabled to doctor's appointments, weddings, church, other functions etc.

If your grandfather is collecting SS/Medi-Cal/Medi-Care, you can get one through them to assist for the day.
