Not even a dollar dance.... a money boot

I attended a wedding this weekend. Maybe its all the time I've spent in here, but I was looking to be "properly hosted" (and I dont mean fancy/expensive....just, treat your guests well). If anyone remembers, this is the girl I posted about who had 2 showers and invited us to both. So, her wedding...

I attended a wedding this weekend. Maybe its all the time I've spent in here, but I was looking to be "properly hosted" (and I dont mean fancy/expensive....just, treat your guests well). If anyone remembers, this is the girl I posted about who had 2 showers and invited us to both.

So, her wedding was lovely. She looked beautiful. The food was delicious. No alcohol, which was a bummer for us. I'm not a huge drinker, but I enjoy a few glasses of wine to celebrate.

Then.....the DJ announced a money dance. Personally, they don't offend me. I think they can be cute. But this.....wasn't that. This was the MOH and BM going table to table, literally asking for money, while the DJ said "help them go on their honeymoon!". They aren't going on a honeymoon, FYI. When our table declined to give cash (because sorry, we've given a gift and we're kinda broke), the BM gave us a hard time. The bride and groom were not dancing with anyone during this time....it was literally a quick fundraiser. Ugh.

I'm not offended by dollar dances, as I feel that's something guests can choose to participate in or not, but the boot thing is just crazy stupid.

And ransoming the bride?! I would have got up, picked up my gift and left.

So I'm curious what these people are like IRL...are they kind of greedy? Nice but clueless? I mean, who does this? Obviously you like them enough to attend their wedding. What are they like? Is it cultural or something?

I was just thinking.....buy me a drink before you take my $$!!!

IRL....she's a nice enough person, but no regard for the "polite" thing. She told me (at my engagement party) that if I ever hurt H, she would kick my ass. Like that's totally normal. Not concerned with stuff like that. She's his friend, mind you.....not mine. We're pleasant, but not friends. For reasons like this haha.

OMG........that brought the words "tacky" and "obnoxious" to a whole new level.

Definitely not cool! I'm not against honey funds because that's a wedding gift (unpopular opinion here I know). But to give a gift and then have the couple ask for more gifts (essentially) is gross.

Ok wait, ransoming/kidnapping the bride is an old cultural custom from...I forget where...but it's a cultural thing. Some people still do it. Obviously it's just a custom...nobody is kidnapped, people.

What I really want to know is...is this money boot thing cultural? Because it might be, and if so, be tolerant of it.

Clearly it's not something anyone who's posted in this thread would do, but you know, these people did it. I actually would like to know more about it. Haven't heard of this. I'm curious.

No alcohol. Literally asking for a donation. Wow, just, wow. At least give me the choice of having some alcohol. Then maybe they would have gotten a lot more.

But yeah. I'm okay with money dances, but not dancing. That's just rude, especially if they aren't going on a honeymoon. I mean I guess it's better than the kidnapping thing. WTF is that? Let's promote violence and cash grubbing at the same time! Who thinks that a good idea? That just reminds me of that story of that wedding where the bride was "captured by ISIS." Like...really?

For kidnapping the bride (I honestly never heard it outside my family, lol): Essentially a bunch of the aunts carry the bride out of the reception and tell the groom he better find some money if he wants her back. The bride usually takes a breather with her mom and then the groom does something like sings (or just asks).

My aunts love it, it's the first thing they started planning when I got engaged, but we're pretty sure my FH's family will die of shock.

I wonder whose idea this was....the poor DJ. I mean thats what you say. "help them on their honeymoon." "Help them start their life together." lol Strange.

At work we do a MDA LockUp charity event where some attorneys sign up to be taken to jail. They sit in a fake jail cell at a conference room somewhere and are not let out until they raise enough money.

But I don't find that appropriate for a wedding. I don't think anyone should have to take out money at a wedding.

I still want to know what the bride was saying when people were refusing to put money in the boot.
