No hors d'oeuvres at wedding?

Jenn, on October 6, 2015 at 3:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

Hi again everyone, second post today. Smiley smile

What are your thoughts on no hors d'oeuvres at a wedding? I think we're going for a Mexican theme food-wise, so we would have chips and salsa served before dinner but is that not enough/tacky to not have anything else served before dinner?

Are you serving hard liquor? Do you have a cocktail hour?

If you are serving liquor, people might need more than chips and salsa.

    That's my favorite part.....

How about adding guacamole with crudites, maybe chicken or beef skewers?

    How long is cocktail hour?

I think this would be fine if you forgo the traditional hour break between ceremony and reception (when many couples do their photography) - If instead you did a first look, and then took 15 to 20 minutes to allow guests to get to the dining (assuming everything is on site?) in which you did your group shots, I think chips and salsa would be fine. If you were keeping people waiting (and drinking) for an hour + that would be a mess. People would be hungry and cranky... and tipsy!

Hi Jenn! What time does your wedding start, and how long will your cocktail hour be?

If your guest are waiting for you to take pictures or you are havering a med to large gap between ceremony and dinner I would say you need something a little heavier possible guacamole and cheese quesadilla triangles with sour cream . Plus the liquor served the more people tend to eat.

We're doing Mexican too - hiring a taco cart - and our timeline is pretty fast, but we're still doing light appetizers. Wedding is at 3, cocktail hour at 4, dinner at 5. We're having ceviche and chips (provided by our caterers) and we're also going to get fruit, cheese, and crackers from Costco. Personally, I'd rather have too much food than have guests wishing there was more food.

We aren't having a cocktail hour, the reception begins right after the ceremony, so we aren't having hors d'oeuvres at all. If you are making your guests wait for the reception, you should definitely have food for them in the meantime. If it's around a mealtime, chips and salsa aren't going to be enough, but if it's like 3pm, I think that's fine.

Yes we'll be serving alcohol. Definitely thinking about adding something more like a dip or guac. Wedding will probably start at 6-6:30, dinner I'm guessing around 7:30/8, reception will go until 11pm.

Some kind of quesadilla sounds like a good idea!

You make a good point Allison. If we do small appetizers (chips and dip, etc.) then we may have to do a first look to avoid all of that.

Hi Jenn! We're also doing Mexican food for our wedding and our cocktail hour will be about an hour long, no more than that. I would suggest adding just one or two more options. Ours is chips, salsa, queso, guacamole, plus a fruit spread.

Good idea Rebecca! I went to a wedding a couple years ago at this same venue and they did Mexican and just had chips and salsa, maaaybe queso but I want to say they didn't, and it was fine. I don't remember how long cocktail hour was though. But queso, guac and fruit are great options.

I would go heavier than chips and salsa if people will be drinking liquor for 1-1.5 hours.

Add something like queso or guacamole for a little more substance. You should give people enough food that they won't be uncomfortably drunk before dinner.

We are also doing Mexican! We are doing jicama, mango, and watermelon spears with chili power and lime (a mexican street food) and taquitos.

I've been to a wedding too where they only had chips and salsa and it was fine, but cocktail hour was earlier, like 4 pm, so people weren't as hungry yet. I think with your timeline heavier apps are in order. Our queso will also have meat in it.

I could literally LiVE on alcohol and child and salsa it's my favorite. That being said I too am having a Mexican themed wedding (it's in Mexico) and for cocktail hour were are having hors d'oerves but only a few selections but at least something to soak up the booze in addition to chips and salsa.

For just two additional hors d'oeuvres (cheese & crackers with fruit, and a Mexican layered bean dip and chips, in addition to the chips and salsa) from the caterer we're considering (which is the cheapest I've found...) it would be about $500-$600 more. Ugh Smiley sad If we just did the bean dip, it's only about $230 more. Do you think that would be enough with the chips and salsa?

Oooh, and if you do fruit, be sure to put out the Tajin seasoning and lime juice. Muy bueno!

I think if it's only going to be a few hundred dollars more to also include cheese and crackers and fruit, it's worth it.
