No hors d'oeuvres at wedding?

Hi again everyone, second post today. What are your thoughts on no hors d'oeuvres at a wedding? I think we're going for a Mexican theme food-wise, so we would have chips and salsa served before dinner but is that not enough/tacky to not have anything else served before dinner?

How long will the cocktail hour be? Thinking about Mexican and doing Mexican are two different things. Are you sold on Mexican?

Large amounts of food aren't necessary during cocktail hour (although I'm a firm believe that anything called, "cocktail hour" should feature cocktails, so a few apps are fine, IMO).

You mentioned chips and salsa? Can you add nachos and cheese (I'd be all over that)? Would these apps be self serve?

I would say to do the cheese, crackers and fruit in addition to the chips if you can only add that or the bean dip. Cheese, crackers and fruit are less messy than bean dip and overall will soak up the booze better.

Thanks for your feedback everyone! We aren't 100% sold on Mexican but FH really love it and it seems to be one of the cheaper options.

I definitely think we will add at least one other appetizer with the chips and salsa, either the fruit and cheese platter or Mexican bean dip with chips. Smiley smile

We're not having any hors d'oeuvres, but we're going straight from our ceremony into our reception. I think if you're going to have a break in between the two you'd need to have some hors d'oeuvres for your guests, especially if they'll be drinking. I went to a wedding over the weekend where they didn't serve hors d'oeuvres and had a two and half hour break between the ceremony and reception. By the time dinner was served everyone was starving!

What about street tacos? They are simple--just a corn tortilla, meat, and lime. If you don't want to do that I'd at least at guacamole, queso, bean dip, and maybe a fruit spread.

I think if you add in some heavier dips you'll be okay, but adding some quesadillas or taquitos would be great.

If your serving alcohol then you might want it just to fill everyone stomachs.

Maybe just me, but I would all over some mini quesadilla appetizers! I guess not everyone likes Mexican food, though, so may be good to include a more "normal" option. But it sounds like you have a plan for serving both chips and salsa and something else, so I think (regardless of what you choose) that will be enough to keep everyone satiated during cocktail hour.
