no HARD liquor at the reception

dionna , on January 6, 2011 at 2:53 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

So, one of the venues that I am interested in has a rule that you can have NO HARD LIQUOR on the premises! You are only allowed to serve beer, wine and champagne. Does this sound like this would make the reception a DRAG for attendees?

It depends on your guests. My guests don't really drink beer and neither do I, but if your guests do, I don't see it as a problem.

Depends on the crowd. We had a beer and wine reception, with a champagne toast, and people were just as able to get sloshed lol. No one complained.

I think its important to consider your crowd...if your friends are like my friends and love to do rounds of shots then yeah it might be a bit of a bummer. If you LOVE the venue though, I would still consider it, people can do with out for one night.

I feel like most drinkers are at least satisfied with either wine or beer, even if it's not their preference. DS and I certainly are (I like wine; he generally prefers beer).

The big thing is to make sure to offer a few options in both categories, so at least one red wine and one white wine, etc.

You would have to consider your crowd and what the majority drinks. I've never been to a wedding htat served only beer, wine and champagne. But I'd be happy with that. As long as there was a good selection of what is being served.

I do have to ask out of curiosity, what kind of venue is it?

Not at all. A lot of weddings are beer and wine only. If you know that your guests are definitely the hard liquor crowd and it's important to you to have it, then it may be a good reason to find a different venue. But in general, while you may have a few grumblers, beer and wine will make for a fun time.

I have a crowd of both.... and I know a lot of my fam is kind of urban (read: ghetto) lol and will probably BYOB in the purse or something lol!! I dont think it would be a HUGE deal, but I know a lot of them will probably be hoping for COCKTAILS as well... grrr! I really like this location. Its a Universalistic church which is why I assume they dont do hard liquor! hmmmmm wonder if we could sneak some LOL

We had beer and wine (champagne for toast) at our wedding, I didn't hear any complaints. Honestly I have friends who love to do shots, but hey, this was a wedding, not a night at the club. If the venue is nice then I'd say it's a small concession to make.

Don't "assume" anything, you need to ask. YOu never know- they could allow it, they could allow NO alcohol at all! That's something that has to be discussed.

@Analy.... it says CLEARLY they do not hard liquor. When I said "assume" I meant I ASSUME being that its a church that is their reasoning.

I don't think it would be a drag, that should be grateful for the free booze, ya know? :-)

If you like the venue then I would go with it regardless. We didn't serve any alcohol. I knew people liked it but it was something we chose not to serve. We had our reception at a venue that had an restaurant and bar and we allowed people to go there. People work with what you have got and if they get upset about it that is up to them.

I wont be having any. Yepp weird I know.(not because of venue restriction, because I have a personal issue with alcohol)

I think anyone that would complain about what YOUR serving them at YOUR WEDDING can just be told to shut the eff up. Smiley smile

Besides I think(but dont know, I havent been to many weddings) that most weddings are usually beer and wine and champagne only right?

Most people will say it's your wedding, not everyone elses so don't worry about everyone else. Me...I want everyone to enjoy it so we'll be having an open bar, top shelf the whole time. I think depending on the crowd it's a good idea to have more. I've been to some weddings that were low key enough that it didn't matter but I've been to some that beer and wine just wasn't enough!

I'm currently in the same situation. My fiancé and I don't truly have time to continue to look for the next best wedding venue due to our wedding taking place in 6-7 months away on 10/08/2021. This venue used to be a winery so they are obviously allowing wine and beer, but NO HARD LIQOUR which sucks for our family and friends lol.. I personally don't drink so I truly don't care, but everyone we know drinks so we are thinking about sneaking some in somehow. This venue is in our price range and it comes with four airbnb apartments so I'm super excited regardless of anything.

Be careful on the sneaking in. You could get in a whole lot of trouble, the least being the venue stopping the whole thing and kicking you out.
