So we are having an evening wedding. I will be getting married at the same venue as my reception. The wedding starts at 6:30p.m. So I was thinking of just having a dessert bar and our cake of course. I was thinking no dinner. Would that still be okay ? We are having a dance and bar. I figured since...

    Even if you push your ceremony and reception back, you need to offer food. Heavy apps or a meal. Period. Offering your guests drinks and dessert is going to make them a) really drunk really fast and b) incredibly hungover due to sugary desserts and booze. I would 100% expect a meat any wedding that started at 3 PM or later. No matter if it started at 7 or 8. I wouldn't even think there might not be food. And if an invitation said, "desserts and drinks to follow," for a 630 PM wedding? I wouldn't go.

    Giiiiiiiirl! You better feed your guest! I have dinner 9pm and while that's late it is normal for most people to eat after 6pm.

    People will not have time to eat beforehand because they will be getting ready and then driving to your wedding. Provide food.

    In what world do you not feed your guests who are potentially traveling to see you, spending money on attire, and more than likely giving you a nice gift??

    6:30 isn't late. That's exactly at dinner time. People will be expecting dinner. You could only pull that off if you were having a midday ceremony.

    Wait so someone else wants to do evening and no meal!?

    Shocker! Not.

    Guess I'm not the only one who eats dinner early.

    But what I don't get is people saying even if the OP moves the time to later she still must serve food. Because 5-10pm is meal time.

    Ok WTH?

    If cake n punch is OK at 2 pm because it's in between meal times... there's got to be a cut off for dinner hour.

    If cake n punch is served at 2 that means lunch is noon but *gasp* how dare someone serve only cake n punch because guests were too busy getting ready at noon to actually eat lunch so now you should feed them.

    Freaking double standards! Hello!!

    I would be disappointed with no dinner as a guest.

    @jacks

    But what I don't get is people say dinner falls within a 5 hour window. 5-10pm

    But lunch?

    2 pm cake n punch is ok... so lunch is between what? 11-1pm? 3 hrs is ok for lunch but dinner gets 5hrs?

    Not only that but 2pm is ok for cake n punch but the issue a lot of people bring up is the guests getting ready... so if cake n punch is at 2 then guests are getting ready at lunch time.

    Basically everyone is saying it's ok etiquitte at mid day but not ok at end of day.

    I'd be super surprised if there wasn't dinner...and once I found out I'd probably leave pretty early because I'd be starving.

    @Jessica, I think she said 6:30

    I can't eat lunch prior to an event, it would just be bad. Some may run out of time while getting ready. Also, some guests may have BP issues, or Diabetes, can't just serve minimal amount of food.

    Oh well, I wouldn't be serving any alcohol at my gathering. Because we aren't drinkers and most of our guests don't drink either. None of our parents or our kids obviously... and the only 2 drinkers are 1 of each of our brothers.

    But OP plans to provide lots of booze.

    Not okay. People won't eat before a 6:30 wedding. They'll be getting ready and driving in. You absolutely need to serve a meal.

    This sounds like a repeat of the Sandra thread.

    No, you cannot do a dessert only reception with 6:30 ceremony. Also, depending upon where you live, food may be a requirement with bar set up.

    Please listen to the advice here and serve your guests dinner.

    2ndtime, it's been a pattern where all threads seem to revolve around you. We get it, you want to have a party with no food or alcohol. Have at it.

    If you want guests that are falling down drunk and puking because they didn't have actual food as a buffer for all the alcohol then absolutely have at it.

    Sounds like tons of fun!
