No Caterers in the area....cater our own wedding?!?!

Jessica, on May 16, 2016 at 1:45 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

Hi everyone! My fiancée and I are getting married late next year and we are trying to narrow down certain things like venue, budget, preliminary guest list, etc. I was reviewing caterers for the area where we want to wed, but the closest caterer is 2 hours away. Would a caterer even be willing to travel that far? Has anyone prepared their own reception food? I am trying to look at all options and see what is best for us. We are having a rustic, outdoor wedding in the middle of no where! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Don't self cater. Look into restaurants that cater

Self catering is a hot topic here due to food safety concerns and people getting sick. Vendors can make people sick too, but they will likely take responsibility and give something back.....

Definitely don't self cater. If you can't find a caterer to come to your venue look into restaurants.

Self catering is never a good idea and can cause so many problems from stress to food poisoning.

Are all your other vendors traveling that far?

If you';re getting married at the location on your profile, most Bakersfield caterers will probably be willing to make the trip.

Ask your venue for recommendations. Do not self cater. Ever.

Most caterers will travel, but they might charge a travel fee. If not, try a restaurant.

No self-catering. If there are no caterers in the area willing to travel, get food from a restaurant or change the location of your wedding.

I highly advise against self-catering. You may need to make over plans.

Agreed with others. Self catering is an awful idea. Check into restaurants. Ask the venue where you are getting married. I'm sure you're not the only person to have a wedding in that town, let alone that venue. They should be able to help you out.

I self-catered, but I have experience in large planning and food safety.

If you'e never cooked for large amounts of people, I would NOT recommend it.

Go with a restaurant. Often times they cater - in that you can hired serving people to serve the food, too.

When we catered, we routinely went to the NJ shore, and in season? Two hours at the minimum.

Check out restaurants, delis too. But is everyone traveling two hours, vendor wise? Guest wise?

Don't do this yourself. Again; we used to to this work, and doing anything in the middle of nowhere is no fun. You have plenty of time to think about another location because just the minimal details you've provided are worrysome, as in "end of october? Middle of nowhere?" Coldness? Snow?

Most caterers will travel. You may have to pay an extra fee, but if you really want to get married "in the middle of nowhere", you will have to consider travel fees for all of your vendors

I find it impossible that someone somewhere doesn't cater to you're area.

I don't think 2 hours is an unreasonable distance, you should definitely at least ask the question or look into local restaurants. If you have to pay a travel fee for the caterers, you pay that travel fee. You have time to plan and save for that.

Thank you everyone for your advice! I really appreciate it and I now have more questions to ask the caterers and have already started making lists of restaurants to call.

Our wedding is about an hour away from civilization and we had a few options. Once you nail down your venue, check in with them. They may have some suggestions as well. I had to contact 5 or 6 caterers before finding one that fit our budget and distance (and FH's specific food requests). You'll find something. Just don't self-cater. Too much stress for you to worry about and too many risks!
