No Camera Rule at Bridal Salon

Melissa, on January 16, 2017 at 11:18 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 37

I went wedding dress shopping over the weekend and at one of the salons they had a no pictures rule. You're only allowed to take pictures once you purchase the dress. Has anyone else ran into this? It makes no sense to me as dresses can look different in pictures so there was no way that I was going to buy a dress without seeing it in a picture. Plus its hard for me to include those dresses in my consideration set since I can't look at them. I'm also just not sure what purpose it serves because they carry popular designers and I was easily able to look the dress up online.

It pissed me off so much that I refuse to buy a dress from this store even if the dress I love from there is the one I pick.

This did happen to me at the first shop I went to but my friends pretended to be taking selfies and took a few pictures. I went to 10 stores and only had this happen at 1 of them.

When I went shopping with my best friend for her wedding dress, three salons had that rule. When I went for myself, every salon (3) encouraged me to take pictures. That's how I picked my dress from my 2 favorites. One looked much better in pictures than the other!

That seems to be standard procedure, in the shops I've been inside. I remember a "Say Yes to the Dress," where the bride was sneaking photos in the dressing room. Presumably, because she was going to have a duplicate made.

That's probably a rule because they don't want you trying to find the same dress for cheaper elsewhere; I'm going to assume their sales associates make commission off their dress sales.

I think it's a silly rule myself since you could just easily print out a picture of the dress online and shop around that way, but hey, they get an A for trying.

That happened to me at one shop, although they did allow me to FaceTime with my sister out of state since she couldn't be there with me. The one dress I was looking at there wasn't really a top contender anyhow, but it would have been nice to compare/contrast with photos later on. Oh, well!

I had this issue at a salon in atl. It was quite annoying.

I went to 2 salons besides DB and both had that note on the paperwork but didnt enforce it. My bridesmaids and Moms were taking pictures anyway. I guess they were just gonna wait until they were told no.

I did not have this problem but it would have prevented me from buying a dress from that shop. In the end it was the pictures of me in my dress that sold me completely. There are some things you just don't notice when you are looking in a mirror and everyone else is sending their opinions your way. It was in the quiet moments at my house looking at pictures that I knew for sure which dress I loved and which dress I looked best on me. Smiley smile

One of the salons here had that rule. They carried several more higher end lines like Vera Wang. They said the designers required it. However, they allowed facetime. So we facetimed with my aunt and she took a screenshot for me. Not a super clear picture but it was helpful. I was able to rule out one dress based on her picture.

Honestly I find the logic behind the rule kind of antiquated. It makes it seem like salons don't seem to understand their target customer or how media works today.

I had a few that restricted photos to your top or top 3 choices, but not no pics at all. That's not cool. However I also found a lot of the time if I was just really nice about it they'd look the other way when my mom took one. If the store made you unhappy, don't get your dress there. You should be happy with a place you're giving lots of money to. If you fell in love with a dress there, try and find another shop that can get it. That's what I did. The store where I found my dress were big b*%@$s and almost made me cry once, so I found a store that could order me the same dress where they were really nice and made me feel comfortable and excited.

YES this happened to me and I was so very annoyed. The store had already cut out the tags on all the dresses so there was no way to know the designer. The funny thing was, they let me facetime with my friend so what's preventing her from taking a screenshot of that? I DID end up buying my dress there despite this icky practice (suffering from a lil dress regret still but it's too late!).

The bridal salon I went to was fine with you taking pictures in dresses but you could not take pictures of the style name/number or price tag.

I didn't run into this but I've heard about it occurring. They don't want you to price compare. I did have a place that wouldn't tell me the names of the dresses I liked so I couldn't look for them elsewhere.

I wouldn't completely rule out that salon based on just that. To me it's about how I feel in the dress. Had we not taken pics of my dress I would still love it. I also only went to one salon. I suppose it's different if you're to completely sold and need to think it over.

One salon I went to had that policy--I assumed it was because the shop had some "exclusively carried here" dresses, and they didnt want me photographing those. However, they were more than forthcoming with the designer and style # for the dress so I could look it up online and ogle it as much as I wanted.

I went to one that had the same policy,

Then I went to one where the girl took my phone from my mom so she could take the pics better, since my mom is terrible at taking pics. She was super cute and insisted on taking pics of every single angle/and a video while I was walking and she accessorized me to the nines in every dress. I had a blast! She was great!

I went yesterday for the first time too and they had the same rule. Only if your purchase.. I went with friends just to get ideas and wanted to show my mom after and I couldn't even do it.

That's a stupid rule and I wouldn't buy a dress from a shop like that, especially if other people couldn't come with you and you'd like to show them your options.

All the salons I went to in Boston had this rule. I hated it. I was allowed to have pictures after I paid and signed the contract. I bought it anyways because it was one of a kind during a trunk show but I have been meaning to write an honest review for them
