No Camera Rule at Bridal Salon

I went wedding dress shopping over the weekend and at one of the salons they had a no pictures rule. You're only allowed to take pictures once you purchase the dress. Has anyone else ran into this? I went wedding dress shopping over the weekend and at one of the salons they had a no pictures rule. You're only allowed to take pictures once you purchase the dress. Has anyone else ran into this? It makes no sense to me as dresses can look different in pictures so there was no way that I was going to buy a dress without seeing it in a picture. Plus its hard for me to include those dresses in my consideration set since I can't look at them. I'm also just not sure what purpose it serves because they carry popular designers and I was easily able to look the dress up online.

It pissed me off so much that I refuse to buy a dress from this store even if the dress I love from there is the one I pick.

The salon I went to told me I couldn't take pictures because the sample didn't fit properly and they don't want people going home and changing their mind about a dress based on a picture where the fit is wrong. It was annoying but I understood.

Demetrios by Macy's where I purchased my dress from had that rule. Honestly it didn't bother me. Their reasoning is how I looked then (with poor lighting in their salon, etc.), versus how I will look all dolled up with appropriate lighting with a pro photographer, is going to look vastly different. I was cool with it. I have a photo of the dress from their website and Instagram pages.

It's so you can't take a picture to a seamstress and have them replicate it ripping off the designers IP

I've never heard of this rule but it would've stopped me from getting a dress there! I actually chose my dress based on pictures. I have a problem with liking whatever I have on in that moment the best and forgetting about what I had on beforehand. I needed to see pictures not only to remind myself what it looked like but to see myself from a different point of view and see how the dress photographed.

It depends on the store. I thinks it's for 2 reasons: 1) they don't want you taking a photo then going to your own seamstress to try to get it made cheaper, and 2) they don't want you to price-compare or (if it's an older dress) buy it used online.

Some of the salons say it upfront that they don't allow photos, but I always asked nicely and said I needed to see how it would photography before I decided. I was also dress shopping alone because my parents don't live near me so I needed their help to make a decision.

I agree with previous posters, if there are salons who will let you photograph, try to give your business to them.

Eta: I think what @BlueDevil said above makes sense. It might be a vestige of the pre-Internet or early internet days. With the way media works now, it doesn't really make sense.

I've heard of that, but didn't run into that myself. The stores I went to were all very encouraging of taking pics, and just super low-pressure in general- one even sent me home with a list of all my favorites with prices. I would not like being told I couldn't take pics- it's a big purchase and pictures were very handy for me with figuring out what I liked.

I've never heard of that. I get that they want to protect themselves, but that's a horrible thing for the customer. Why make such an important purchase difficult? And what if you want to show a loved one who couldn't be there before you commit? I wouldn't buy from there.

The place I got my dress has this rule. Honestly though it didn't bother me. I went to another store after and I just kept remembering the dress and it made it so much for special when we did take the photos after I went back and got it

My salon had this rule, too. FYI I asked and it was explained that the designers had required it in order to carry their dresses so people don't come in and take pictures and produce knock-offs. I had to commit to a dress before I could take pictures. I really wasn't that upset about it.

Salon where I purchased my dress didn't allow photos until purchase. My friends secretly snapped a bunch for me. Once I picked the gown we took a million!

2 of the 3 places I went had this rule, but only 1 enforced it. The Sand woman even took some pictures for me at the ship I bought my dress from. Once I bought the dress, they let me take many pictures as I wanted

This happened to me. At the bridal shop where I bought my dress. Their policy was different though. You could take a picture of your FAVORITE dress. So i tried on about 5 or 6 and went back to the one I loved the most. It was the one I ended up buying. It did upset me in the beginning, but they weren't rude about it so I didn't care.

They do it so that you can't have a cheap knock-off made. People do it quite a bit, and it's an intellectual property problem.

The salon I went to (and purchased my dress from) does have the no pictures rule. They were very open about it and ensured I knew this was a standing policy. They post it on their website, reminded me when making my appointment, again when they called to confirm my appointment, and again when we arrived day of.

For me, I get it... it's their business and they have to look out for themselves. The salon said it was because of agreements they have with various designers.

I didn't need to see me in a photo. There were plenty of mirrors and my closest family right there with me.

This happened to me at the salon I actually bought my dress from. My friend snuck in some pics but they were not clear.
