Nigerian + American "white" wedding ceremony all in one

Vandra, on October 19, 2020 at 1:21 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 3

My FH is nigerian and I love the culture and I want to have a traditional ceremony but think it may be cost prohibitive. Wondering if anyone has experience combining traditional elements into their reception.

We did a joint ceremony with two priests. Had one reception. It was definitely a little longer on the ceremony side but I think it worked out

I'm Nigerian and planning 2 separate events but I've been to a few white weddings where they've done the following things that are typically done at traditional weddings:

    1. Presentation of kola nut between families during the reception (igbo)

    2. Presentation/ acknowledgment of "era iyawo" gifts displayed at the reception (Yoruba)

    3. The Igbo tradition where a bride is given palm wine in a cup and is asked to show everyone her husband by going to find him amongst a crowd of people and presenting him with the drink.

    4. Cultural dance and song

All of these things can be done after you've done all the American wedding traditions you want to do before all the partying begins. You may even want to change into traditional attire and use this Nigerian traditional wedding presentations as the transition between the reception program and the party.

I've also seen people plan a traditional wedding, white wedding ceremony, and reception as 3 events in the same day.
