Nerdy/artsy Wedding Theme Ideas?

Lisa, on April 8, 2019 at 7:40 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 25

Hi there! I am struggling with coming up with ideas for our theme. Our ceremony is going to be at an estate house on an art museum property and our reception is at an art gallery, so you'd think we could just do something artsy/crafty and call it a day, right? Funny thing is, though we both appreciate art, neither of us are very "artsy." Smiley laugh We are in fact, very nerdy and geeky and love sci-fi and fantasy. We like the idea of incorporating some talent from our close friends (one does stained glass, one does jewelry, etc.) but we ALSO want to incorporate our nerdiness (video games, board games, fandoms, etc.)

I thought about having "Fantasy" as the theme, allowing us to incorporate all sorts of things. I just don't want that to be interpreted inappropriately. Some of our favorite fandoms are Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Final Fantasy, Firefly/Serenity, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Walking Dead, Harry Potter, Settlers of Catan, Gloomhaven, 7 Wonders, things like that. How could we come up with a theme that allows us to not only include some arsty/crafty bits (like the stained glass) but also Legend of Zelda, Star Wars, etc.?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Smiley heart

We’re doing formal with hints/nods towards star wars. We’re kind of running with the I Love You I Know” as the basis of our theme. Center pieces will hunt at lightsabers without being them, we’re hoping to do a lantern release that night to hint towards my love of disney.

We’re adding small hints of nerdy to the wedding! FH and his groomsmen will be wearing Zelda pins instead of boutonnières and marvel bow ties and I added Harry Potter bouquet charms to the bouquets and just little things added to the centerpieces and I made signs with quotes from our favorite movies/shows to put around the venue 😊

Yeah! This is what I'm talking about, just little touches here and there. So do you guys have a theme? Or do you not really need one?

We’ve just been telling everyone that our theme is nerdy haha but it’s more of a really subtle theme I guess

Nerds here, too! So far this is what we're planning: Doctor Who table numbers, dice, meeples, and Magic the Gathering boutinerres, sonic screwdriver bouquet handles, and a Legend of Zelda surprise for FH. My FH will also be wearing a navy suit and red Converse a la Tenth Doctor. We're going to have smaller hobby board games at the reception.

Okay, so you don't really have to have a name for your theme? Smiley smile

Carol, I love all of those ideas! That's awesome! We plan to have some board games at ours too. Do you have a "theme"?

Maybe our theme is "Adventure?" That reminds me too much of hiking or rock climbing though. What would be a good theme name that means exploring, or experiencing an adventure via a board game, video game, TV show, etc? Like... my fiance and I love experiences: playing through an RPG game, reading a good story, role-playing a character in D&D, building settlements in Catan, flying through the 'Verse in Firefly, etc. What would you call that? Haha...

Our overall theme is celestial. (FH asked me out after sending me a link to Jonathan Coultan's "I'm Your Moon".) Our decor will be mostly navy with touches of gold, brass, and copper and lots of stars (lights, paper Moravian stars, metal star "curtain" backdrops).

You definitely don't have to have theme or a name for it. For me, it helped center things and made searching for inspiration a lot easier.

    Ooooh, that's cool! Love it!

Okay, I'll try to come up with just a very general idea and go from there. Thanks for all the advice everyone! Feel free to keep adding ideas!

We're doing some things that are low-key, but in the nerdy. We have a "written in the stars" theme, but we're too cool not to include hidden details. We're going a handfasting mirrored after the unbreakable vow in Harry Potter. We'll be jumping the broom at the end of the ceremony- the broom is a Nimbus 2000. The boys will have marvel and dc shirts hidden (revealed in pictures). I'm also thinking that the tables will be named after our nerdiness. His is battletech, star wars, etc. Mine is harry potter, Fillory, and Lord of the Rings.

Oh, that's neat! I like the idea of hidden shirts, that's so fun! I thought about having each table be a specific fandom, might have to experiment.

    Thanks for the info!

We're having a traditional ceremony, but everything is our favorite baseball team-themed, with a swordfight at the reception (we're actors), and hints of the nerdy things we love.
Sometimes it helps to just go on Etsy and search the things you love in conjunction with "wedding". You'll find all kinds of stuff there!

Fellow nerd here. Instead of doing a specific theme, I would incorporate different aspects that speak to you both as individuals and as a couple. When we were trying to narrow it down to one specific theme, we realized that we were then excluding so many other aspects that make us, "us". So we are having a bunch of different things that tell our story.

For example, We love the country, own a small homestead, and I love older architecture. So our ceremony is in a Victorian gothic church and reception is in a 19th century barn. We both hunt, fish, grow our own crops, and do a lot of food preservation, so last year I froze our entire black raspberry harvest and I am making 150 jars of jam as our favors. All grown and made on our homestead. I'm also using mason jars for our floral centerpieces and putting tea lights in 8oz and 4oz jars since I have hundreds from all of my canning. Our wedding cake knife/server had handles made from antler, our invitations have a deer with flowered branches as antlers, and our table numbers are wooden with antlers framing each number. We are ASOIAF fans and are being introduced into the reception to the GOT main theme song (fiancé's request), I'm a Renaissance Faire geek and have been going since I was a baby with my mother. We got horn ale mugs as the groomsmen gifts. I also

got a beautiful hand made unity candle from the candlemaker at the faire, as well as stunning wedding chalices of dragons forming a heart made from pewter and glass... Just so many individual unique aspects to tell our story.

I would try and do something like that, this way you don't feel like you can't have something you would really like to have because it doesn't go with your theme. At first I was concerned that our wedding would be just a mess of mish-mashed chaos, but it all tied together beautifully. Nerd away my friend and fly those geek flags high!

Okay, this might be one of the best comments yet! You are absolutely right, and I too was worried that our wedding would be a mess of miss-matched chaos if I didn't pick a direct theme and tried to stick to it Smiley laugh I love this advice, and (like most nerdy couples I'm sure) we do have very unique qualities in our relationship that makes us "us." This is definitely something I will need to ponder and brainstorm about. Maybe once I nail down a handful of things we definitely want to do, an "umbrella" theme will present itself, something that just describes "us" as opposed to describing the theme.

I LOVE the Renaissance Faire!! Smiley heart My BFF and I used to go every summer before I moved, though I still plan to make the drive at least every other year. There are some extremely talented people out there (and on Etsy, good idea!) so finding accents that match our passions shouldn't be too hard. And perhaps this summer I'll take a trip up to our local Ren Faire for some hand-crafted things. LOVE IT.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write all of that out! I really appreciate the advice. Those photos are beautiful by the way!

I don't really have a theme for you but I was trying to talk my FH into having a string quartet at our wedding by playing him the theme songs to some of his favs like Zelda and ill tell ya, they sound beautiful on the strings. Something to think about adding to your cocktail hour or ceremony. Even if you just have the dj play recordings you don't need an actual quartet. YouTube has a lot of different ones to check out.

We're having a Doctor Who WWE themed wedding! We didn't per se name the theme but created tag lines. Through all of time and space. Don't blink, Blink and you'll miss it! Our hastag is TheTardisLandedOnMartinez. And we're incorporating our theme in different ways. I think what made it easier was decided where the two ideas would be incorporated. We decided to add WWE elements to the groomsmen attire and Doctor Who elements into the girls attire, Have the centerpieces be Doctor Who related. A mix of both for our sweetheart table. It made it easier to then narrow down all the ideas we had! I hope this helps!
