Need some advice and encouraging words :(

Florida Girl, on March 22, 2020 at 10:13 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

We got married at a court house last year, and we are having a reception 5/30 in Connecticut. I have spent about 100k on venue (installments), DJ, dress, floral arrangements, photo booth etc. I have sent out the invites a month ago, and due to corona virus, only a few RSVPed. My husband said to go ahead with the plan if the Venue doesn't cancel. I really don't want to postpone it, and I will be ok even if 20 people attend the reception. It will be very stressful to rearrange everything, spend more money, etc if we postpone it plus we live in South Florida (reception is in CT).

Any advice please?

I know it’s not convenient to postpone, but it really is so extremely selfish to continue hosting events at this point. You’re putting the health of your friends and family, and ultimately the rest of the country, on the back burner for a party.

Have you spoken to the venue? I thought CT (and most of the northeast) is starting to go into more of a lockdown situation. I’d be very surprised if the venue and vendors could continue operating. Seems like the best option is to postpone and work with everyone to find a new date in an effort to keep you, friends, family and the wider community safe and healthy!

I’m not sure what the current situation in Connecticut is but I would wait it out a little bit and see what happens. Many states are doing mandatory stay at home orders. I’d look into that as well.

Have you asked your venue about changing the date rather than canceling. They should hopefully work with you.
Especially if you are spending/have spent 100k on it I would try to work it out. This goes without saying, but That’s A LOT of lot money to be out if you just cancel it or for 20 people attend.
Good luck with your decision. Your wedding will be beautiful regardless of how you proceed.

I know postponing isn’t ideal but that might be best. With all the money you have poured into this, would it really be worth it if a small amount of people show up? Plus think about the health risks.

Definitely check with the venue. A lot of venues are allowing you to postpone and select another date at no additional cost.

You need to start talking with your venue. At this point, the northeast is starting to see the kind of exponential growth that Italy is only *just* starting to get under control, so things could be bad for a while.

I know it's awful, but for your OWN safety, as well as that of guests, you might need to look at postponing.

You may not have a choice. Your venue may force you to cancel and reschedule your reception. I would talk to them about what their long term plan is as of now.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this Florida Girl! It's so upsetting! Right now I feel like it's really difficult to make any kind of definite plans for the next couple of months, given how quickly local situations and guidelines seem to be changing.

Connecticut's Stay At Home order went into effect a few hours ago. Also, as other people said, it's really not safe to be having any kind of event right now, and May is kind of soon. You should definitely at least start asking your vendors what is involved in postponing your wedding.
