Need officiant advice!

Coral, on July 24, 2020 at 5:35 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 17

So, this is especially for anyone in the Richmond, Virginia area, but I will take advice from anyone!

We had planned on my best friend officiating our ceremony in Richmond, VA. He is a minister here in our home state of NC. Well, he was. Because of a recent church move on his part, he needed to complete leadership courses to become a minister in his new church. Because of COVID, these classes were canceled and for all intents and purposes, he is no longer a minister and cannot legally marry us in VA.

We are 3 months away and are not actually from Richmond (I was raised in VA but I have not lived there in years, so don't know any ministers). We are only slightly religious and two different denominations at that (FH is Baptist, I am Episcopal but baptized Catholic), and do not like "preachy" wedding services. And the wedding is on Halloween, which I feel a lot of ministers will have an issue with. I have no idea what to do now. Do we find a minister for hire? Has anyone had success with those? How much do you get to control about the ceremony with those to keep it short, sweet, to the point and not overly religious?

Really spinning with this. This is really the only hiccup we have run into because of COVID and I really cannot imagine my wedding without my best friend officiating it. We have been planning it that way for just about 3 years.

Any advice on finding and succeeding with a stranger officiating over your wedding would be appreciative! Any suggestions for the Richmond area would be even more appreciated!

Take a look at the vendor tab at the top of the page and see reach out to those in the area you are marrying in. Get a consultation with them like any other vendor and see who you click with the best.

A confident and well spoken family member or friend may be able to get ordained online and marry you as well. Whether or not they have to register to conduct wedding ceremonies varies by state.

You might prefer a true minister or a professional officiant but just wanted to share this as an option if you can’t find anything else!

Virginia, unfortunately, is one of a handful of states that don't recognize those online ordination things, otherwise I would happily have my friends or family from back home do it. Thank you though!

I know how to find a vendor. Looking more for feedback on how to navigate picking someone for a very personal job and avoiding the preachy ceremonies I have seen at every wedding I have ever attended.

When you interview them, be upfront about what you want and what you don't. A good, reputable officiant will work with you to reach that goal.

I agree to be up front about what you want when you speak with officiant. You are paying them for a service, they should provide what you are asking for. If they aren’t comfortable doing it the way too want it, they’ll probably tell you rather than waste your time. I know our friends went through the whole script with their officiant prior to the wedding, I don’t know if everyone does that, but you could always ask that way you can address any issues and know exactly what to expect. Good luck!

By went through I mean they sat down together to discuss the script after the officiant had emailed it to them to read through first- this could also be accomplished over the phone since your not local.

I think going over the script would put us at ease! I didn't know real officiants did that. Thank you!

Yeah we are getting married in Virginia and have the same issue. Our friend will be our officiant and he is from DC. We cannot be legally married by him.
Our venue offers a service where they have a legal officiant on hand, And they will attend and sign the paperwork for us. It's a $175 service, so not the cheapest but it's working for us.

I wish our venue had that! But it is a very nontraditional venue at a museum. We had all our i's dotted and t's crossed, found the paperwork he needed to do because he is an actual minister, but they moved, changed churches, and he didn't have the chance to re-minister (I am not religious and do not know the term).

I'd look at the options in your area to order an officiant to do that same thing. Ours will be in Winchester Virginia, and there are people who will show up and do just that. We went with the venue option, although it was $50 more expensive, just for like ease of mind.
    Good luck!

Are they doing the service or just witnessing it?

The guy from the venue is just witnessing. Or honestly just like attending. The venue person said that after the ceremony is done we will meet in a side room with the person and present our marriage license and get it taken care of.

You can't even get married at the courthouse in Richmond so I doubt, but I will poke around. Thanks!
