Need help with wording programs--best man won't be attending...

Megan, on January 29, 2013 at 6:53 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Weird, I know. My FH asked my FBIL to be his best man, then shortly afterwards, we found out he would be deployed to Korea for a year. My FMIL would like us to still list his name on the program. I'm having one of my students who really artistic handwrite them and then I'll scan it and send to a printer. I want it to look this picture, but with a few tweaks. I am going to add "Maid of Honor" because my MOH would appreciate it, but then it feels like I need to add "Best Man" above my FBIL's name. My question: How should I word it? Honorary Best Man? Or should I write something like "serving overseas"

Or, does everyone else just think this idea is crazy, and we shouldn't list him on it, since he's not going to be there? Be honest dear friends Smiley smile

I think you should list him as honorary best man.

If it's important to your FH to add him then I definitely would. I like your "serving overseas" wording. Or if you don't want to be that specific I would add "unable to attend" or something.

I think you should say serving overseas. Honorary best man doesn't tell the story, and the word honorary makes it sound less important.

I like the thought of saying both: Honorary best man, serving overseas

Thank you everyone! I'm glad to see that I'm not crazy for putting him on there. We'll put both on it.

I know its not nearly the same thing, but it is the same dilemma. My FH asked his best friend to be best man about this time last year, when he first decided he was going to propose. After he accepted, there was an accident, and lets suffice to say he wont be attending the wedding. Anyway, FH then asked his brother to stand in, and so on our programs, it will have the girls listed on one side, topped by my sister and "Maid of Honor" and the guys listed on the other side, topped by FH's brother and "Best Man" then directly below him, we'll have his friend's name, topped by "Honorary Best Man". then FH will wear a memory charm on his lapel, under his boutonniere, with his friend's picture on it.
