Need advice on having a reception months after the actual ceremony????

JLSMJR09, on October 1, 2009 at 3:09 PM Posted in Planning 1 9

My fiance and I need to get married sooner due to a change in job and relocation out of the country, but we would still like to have a reception in 6 months for the family to celebrate. We plan on having a small intimate ceremony quickly with our parents to handle the actual marriage and then plan a reception to invite all family and friends. What are the rules/etiquette around this? Can we still have the normal pieces of a wedding such as showers, father daughter dance, etc... I can't seem to find any guidance on this scenario of having to rush the marriage, without losing the traditional wedding planning and reception with dress, cake and all..... any help??

Do whatever you want! brides are doing more and more of whatever they want and less and less of the traditional 'rules'. i really think the best advice is, if you wanna do it, do it!

I think you can. maybe send out save the dates / marriage announcements.

" announcing the marriage of Mr. & Mrs________... ceremony to follow, save the date..."

We are doing this due to a fiance visa. We will be getting married sometime in november and the actual cereony will be feb 7th. we are doing everything as if it was the real wedding. We will redo our vows so that those we are close to can witness this and we will do all the first dances and showers bachelor and hens nights the whole lot. Just because circumstances push the wedding earlier is no reason to miss out on everything so I say go for it we are and everyone understands that.

That's what we did cause he's military, got married last month by the JP and having the wedding next summer, told my mom and few close friends but to everyone else we're still engaged. If you wanna tell people then usually a vow renewal is how it's worded. Good luck & congrats!

Thank you everyone for your input, I didnt think of the vow renewal as as option.... I realize more and more people are getting married in this manner, I just didnt know if it was okay to plan a wedding as normal, if you walked into the JP six months before.... LOL

We're doing the same thing! Most people call it an At Home Reception. Yes, you can do WHATEVER you want! The people that love you just want a chance to celebrate with you!

I think it is great you are planning it all out and still having it and what is best for you. Do what ever your heart desires. People will understand don't worry about that.

I am considering the same thing as well if things don't work out.
