Need a new engagement ring..? Help!

Julianna, on February 24, 2017 at 8:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

So I love my engagement ring, totally fits me (below is a pic). BUT since the gold is mixed with copper (14k gold) it turns my finger blackish. I know the ring is real because we've had several people look at it. So I'm going to have to get a new ring, but my current ring is nonrefundable!! Any suggestions on what we can do to save money? Maybe sell it somewhere?

That is super weird. Why don't you just get a new settlement and keep the diamond? The ring itself is not the expensive part.

I definitely agree with changing the band and keeping the stone. My rose gold ering does this sometimes, though. Usually when I'm really hot and my fingers swell and get sweaty. It rarely happens, but every now and then it does. I'm wondering if it's the copper?

Thanks Melissa! From what I understand is that unless it's pure gold then it is mixed with some copper. I wish they would have told him that before he bought the ring..

It's possible it could be 14k gold plated and that's why it turns your finger black. But I agree with what others said to get a new setting and keep your center diamond.

Does stainless steel or pure silver have alloys? That may be a option

My ring is rose gold and it did that for the first month or so but once I started taking it off when I was my hands and put on lotion, it stopped doing it all together. It's been about 6 months since it's turned my finger even slightly green

There's probably a reason nobody else has recommended this, and maybe this is tacky/cheap/ some other issue, but I'd probably just paint the inside with clear nail polish and redo as needed.

Get a platinum or palladium setting. It won't be rose gold color, but your finger won't turn green.

You can try painting the band with clear nail polish too.

I have a white gold ring, which has nickel in it. I'm allergic to nickel (didn't know white gold had nickel when he bought it). So now I just paint the inside of my band. No more rash!

It could also be the reaction between your lotions and the metal and your body chemistry....if you use hand lotion/cream.

I second the clear nail polish! I have 14k gold and I know what you mean by black (not green) I use clear nail polish on the inside and don't have the problem anymore with it reacting to my skin.
