Naturally curly girls - show me your wedding hair!

MelissaErin, on August 13, 2016 at 5:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

Happy Saturday! So I'm starting to think about wedding hair and I'm not sure what to do. I've never had my hair professionally done. I have naturally thick, curly hair, but I'm having a hard time finding a lot of hair inspiration. Do I leave it curly and, if so, do I really need to pay a hairstylist or do I just throw in a headpiece/headband and call it a day? Do I get it professionally done in some kind of updo? I know people pay big money for curls on their wedding day, I've already got them, but I do want to look a little more special than my day to day hair. Girls with curly hair like me... show me your hair trials, wedding day hair or hair inspiration? Thanks!

ETA: pics to show my hair. Also if someone has the secret to making sure pictures post right side up, let me know!

I have hair like yours but it's not very thick. I like to be pampered from time to time so I'm going to get mine professionally done. They'll be able to make sure your hair stays in place all day.

Few of my inspirations attached. But not really requiring my natural curl.

My hair for reference. Hopefully it's longer in a year. My hair grows slower than a turtle going through molasses.

I have wavy hair, its not straight and not beautifully curly like yours. That said I love my waves and plan on doing this with my hair. I have the waves naturally, and the color and length so I feel like when I found this on Pinterest it would be perfect. Just need to find a clip.

You have beautiful hair, I would let it be naturally beautiful. That way when you look at the pictures you see you and not some version of you. You could pull it away from your face with some pins or twists.

I just pulled my hair out of my face and had the rest down. I ended up with artificial curls because my hair wasn't cooperating that day. It tends to go frizz ball when handled a lot.

Now, I didn't work on my waves, that's why they're a little wonky.

ETA: I didn't use any special products either (mainly mousse or hair spray).

I have hair very similar to yours! I'm going to have my hair stylist add clip on extensions in and do more defined curls. I don't want to lose my curls because they make me feel beautiful, but I want to make it more special than my every day look! My inspiration pic attached

You have beautiful hair. I have naturally curly hair too. Just so you know, the curls you see on brides who have professional hairdos isn't natural, even if the bride has naturally curly hair. When you have natural curls, they blow dry it straight (sounds counterintuitive, I know) and then they curl it. This way, they control the direction of the curl, the strength of the curl, and the frizz factor. So please consider getting it professionally done. It will look more controlled and prettier for your photos.

I've been considering asking the same question! I got better search results when I googled "curly hair updo" than things like "wedding updo." I really want my stylist to work with my natural curl rather than making it look like some straight haired girl. I considered a half up half down style, but decided that my veil and all the hugs throughout the day would probably make for some serious frizz. My go-to updo is setting my hair, adding some product, piling it on top of my head, and pinning it. I'm going to see if my usual hairstylist can do it, or if I should just do it myself. I don't trust very many people with my hair, lol!

I love that idea Bellamae! Elizabeth, you're right - I know I can do my own hair, but curly hair is so unpredictable and you never seem to have a great curly hair day when you need it the most, haha. Having a little professional help would probably be good, but I do still want to look like me.

Find a stylist that is experienced with working with curly hair and do a trial. I add product to my hair to make the waves tamed daily but I don't want to risk having a bad hair day on my wedding. I want someone to bring out the best in them on that day and do the braids and place the pin.

I have naturally very curly hair, but I have to admit - I straightened it and then had it curled for my wedding day. I didn't want to deal with the unpredictability of natural curls (you know what I mean), frizz, etc.

Coming from a curly haired girl, I wouldn't dream of doing my own hair on my wedding day. As much as I love my curls, we know all too well how unpredictable they can be.

Spend the little extra money to make sure you're comfortable with the curls and have one less thing to worry about.

Just here to say you all have gorgeous hair!! A little hair envy here. My hair doesn't hold a curl to save it's life. Love all of your hair!

I'm so glad I saw this post! I had the same question/dilemma. I go to a curly hair specialist And I really wanted him to do my hair but the logistics didn't work out. I knew I definitely wanted curly hair for my wedding...my hair just better, more polished. So I found someone else and I went to my trial with my natural curls. She used a curling iron to enhance my curls. Here is a pic from my trail.

This was my inspiration. Simple, pulled to the side so the back of my dress is still visible.

Not my wedding hair, but a style I had done to attend a friend's wedding.

Here was my wedding hair. Really simple swept to the side with the natural curl kept in.
