Name change at work?

m, on March 18, 2015 at 3:14 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

How did y'all go about your name change at work? I am absolutely changing my name, no hyphen or anything, and am wondering.... do I make some sort of announcement? The actual year-round staff I work with is small and close, but I also work with about 150 individual condo owners.

Should I send out a note explaining, or do I just change it and move on? My e-mail won't have to change, as it's my first name only.

I think it's different at every work place. Ask HR?

I just updated my signature in my e-mail, and changed my name card thing. I don't think you really need an announcement especially since your e-mail address is the same.

Also yes, you should inform HR so they can change over things like your benefits, retirement stuff etc.

Yeah- i'm just going to add it to my email sig and have my business cards reprinted. No one really pays any attention to my last name- so I doubt anyone will really notice.

Small company, HR is our accountant, haha. They all know, so I'm not worried about that. It's more if you have a client base, which I would equate our owners to, did you inform them?

I would just change it and move on, but then casually mention it the first time you email someone who knows you by your maiden name. You could also do something like this: First (Maiden) NewLastName for a few months to transition everything.

You could leave an out-of-office saying you will be out and then add what your new name will be or have your name stamp include your maiden name for a little while.

Edited to add: Since it's just your first name in your email, I don't think there will be too much confusion.

I will probably have to send an email to my department because my email address will change, but at the very minimum I will change my email signature to say Elyse Married (Maiden).

I changed my email signature right when I came back from my wedding, they officially changed my email/hr stuff when it was official with social security. My email is my first initial last name at emmyswork so it kind of surprised people when it changed but emmy isn't that common place so they got it pretty quickly.

Maybe in your email signature you can put (for example):

    Melissa Smith (nee Crawford)

And keep it like that for a month or two, just so clients aren't confused.

For your condo owners, I don't think its necessary to make a formal announcement, especially if your email/contact info isn't going to change. Just update your email signature. I kinda like Elyse's idea to have your maiden name in parentheses, which you could then drop off after a while. ETA: yeah, what C&S said.

I talked to HR and they switched everything over for me. But for my email, they linked my old last name account with my new one so I can be reached at either one. I just put in my signature block "Danie (Maiden) Newname" for a few months, then eventually removed my maiden name entirely.

I work in a small office, I'm just changing it and notifying the accountant and finance/insurance guy. Other than that, I'll tell IT to change my "About us" page on the website and then I have to come up with a new salutation for emails. Right now I always write:

    Best,

    Lia

But that's going to be really weird once my last name is Best!

B/c my department is 90% women we never have this problem (2ladies have married since I started) they come back and their email & signature is already changed. We address each other by first name so no adjustment their. Usually clients address us by first name too (esp w/ feminine names) bc they dont know to put Mrs or Ms when using last names

I'm a teacher, so people refer to me by my last name all day long which is going to definitely be an adjustment! I'm getting married over the summer and our principal sends out a "welcome back" letter full of any news (marriages, babies, retirements, new positions, etc.) that happen over the summer. We also share celebrations at our monthly faculty meetings and we will have one when we get back in August after the wedding. I will actually get a whole new email address so there's that too. I think it depends on how much you deal with clients - they may wonder who this new person is emailing them haha. I would ask others in your office who have gotten married or maybe HR for guidance on what others do.

At my current place we use our first and last names a lot in communications. If I were to stay there I would have to let a lot of people know since my email would change. On the hr side there are so many things that you need to change. Some of the biggest ones are tax forms and insurance along with 401k and any other vendors they give you.

I just changed mine at work and told colleagues... but they already knew that I'd be changing it. If you use email, I found that it helped by adding a line under my new name saying:

*please note change of name from m (maiden name) to m (married name).

I kept this for about a month and then got rid of that extra line, and it helped with those that may not have made the connection otherwise.

I currently have my maiden name in parenthesis and then my new married last name following it. i'll leave it that way for probably a couple more weeks. This way it gives time for everyone to adjust withot confusion.

My work also updated my email address but both still come to me. I had a client ask which email address they should use. I clarified that both wold work but F is the best one to use now and the other one can be deleted from her contacts.
