Naked wedding cake opinions?

Ashlei, on October 1, 2015 at 12:46 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

My FH and I love the idea of doing a naked wedding cake something similar to the picture. We will have about 100 people at our wedding. Our theme is jewel toned/vintage. My question is should be get a small one that is used for our cutting purposes and then have a larger cake in back to serve from? Save money. We would have toppings such as fruits and whip cream. Has anyone does this type of cake? Pricing?

I'm not really a fan of naked cakes. I think for a rustic type wedding, they look good but never really taste that good.

I looove naked wedding cakes, especially because I don't like frosting. A sheet cake will save you a lot of money, but from my experience the naked cakes are a little cheaper anyway.

We plan on ordering one! We would like a lemon cake with raspberry filling. I don't like a lot of frosting and neither does my FMIL. We will have other desserts like cookies and pie if someone really does not like the naked cake.

Oh Smiley sad They are sooo pretty though. What if we did regular iced sheet cake for our guests and just a naked cake for ourselves to cut? Is that stupid? Idk :/

I kind of want a naked cake, I'm not a big frosting girl, actually not a big fan of cake. Because my lack of enthusiasm for cake I'm letting FH choose it, so no naked cake for me. But if I did have a naked cake I would serve it with a side of whipped cream. yum! I love whipped cream and cake.

Personally, I think they're a fad and will look dated in pictures. If you want it, go for it.

I have heard these cakes dry out really quickly and don't taste as good. Perhaps Val's suggestion of light icing to keep the moisture locked in?

We're going for the naked cake! We talked to the baker about dryness, and she said it depends entirely on the type of cake used (no chiffon!). We're doing a three-tier cake, then having a separate sheet cake in the back because it's cheaper. The naked cake doesn't differ in price at all from any other wedding cake through our vendor. It does cost a little extra for fresh fruit, same as a regular cake.

This was our naked mini cake. We have cupcakes for everyone else and saved the rest of our cake for our anniversary.

I could eat frosting directly from the tub that's how much of a sweet tooth I am. That said, we are doing a small cake under a glass bell jar. We are going to for naked...I'm also thinking of making the layers ombre.
